Remembering Wizard Magazine

Posted on 25 January 2011 by Christian

To many of us, Wizard Magazine nurtured the geek in us all. A salute to the great fan mag.

Well today the web lit up with the news that long time geek magazine, Wizard, was closing publication immediately. Some website state that sister magazine, Toyfare, will still be around while other rumors swirl that Toyfare will suffer the same fate as Wizard. Personally, I took this as pretty damn depressing news since I’ve been reading both publications since the fourth grade, but I’m also surprised that Wizard has lasted as long as it has seeing how the ever growing internet had definitely weakened the magazine, seeing how we all have plenty of websites to go to for our toy and comic news.

I think it’s safe to say that I wouldn’t be the fan that I am today without Wizard Magazine. As a kid, I had a small interest in comics but really lived for action figures and had built up a pretty massive collection of any superhero toy I could find. Then one day my dad brought home an issue of Toyfare, figuring an action figure fanatic like me would like it. I haven’t missed an issue since.

Soon I found out that Toyfare had an sister mag called Wizard, and I soon picked up an issue of that. As a kid, Wizard didn’t interest me as much because it didn’t have the sweet toys like Toyfare, but as I got older and my interest in toys faded, I started liking Wizard more and more.

I had a few comic books but didn’t even begin to know how to collect them, which ones to read, what monthly series were the best, etc. Wizard gave me a great jumping off point by introducing me to creators like Frank Miller, Jeph Loeb, Chris Claremont, etc. If Wizard praised a certain graphic novel or storyline I would immediately run out and read it. In no time I had built up a massive store of geek knowledge, I became a sort of go to guy for my friends if they needed any geek knowledge. I could always count on Wizard to recommend what series to check out and for the latest news on my real love: comic book movies.

I ended up graduating high school and went off to college and sadly didn’t have the time or money to keep with with comics, so Wizard became my life line into what was happening in DC or Marvel. It kept me a fan during a very busy and hectic four years and I could always depend on it for a good scoop or a good laugh. Now as I look back, I can see how much Wizard evolved, from a publication dedicated to strictly comics to a magazine dedicated to all facets of geek culture. In whatever form, I always looked forward to picking it up every month to see what was happening in the world of comics

But as Captain Kirk said in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,”But it should be noted that this death takes place in the shadow of new life”.

All is not lost as Wizard will continue as a online publication, and as we all know, death in comic books never lasts. Perhaps one day, we will see Wizard make a surprise comeback on comic book shelves everywhere.

We had the great pleasure here at The Noob News to interview Gareb Shamus, the creator and CEO of Wizard, while we were covering Wizard World’s Austin Comic Con. Check it out here:

Will The Superman Reboot Be Titled: Kal El?

Posted on 25 January 2011 by Christian

It seems this one slipped by when the James Bond title rumor emerged. In the same forum post the title of Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot is “revealed” as being simply Kal El. Any truth to it? Have a look and decide for yourselves..

ItsJustmovies have picked up on this from the original post at Bleeding Cool
Bleeding Cool as they were looking into the rumor of Bond 23 being titled Red Sky At Night. They came across this message on the forum at www.ajb007.co.uk:

Hi, new here guys, nice to find such a cool site. Im close friends with an art director in the film industry, i wont mention his name but he has worked closely with production designer Michael Carlin and is about to start work in Canada on Kal-El, the next Superman movie. He was busy in 2010 on Bond 23 before it went into hiatus. He told me that the movie for a while had the code name Red Shadow, but when official documentation and the script arrived it contained the title Red Sky At Night and as such was reffered to as this by Sam Mendes, Michael Carlin and the producers and the studio etc. I think its a pretty cool title myself though out of the two Red Shadow is better i think though Red Sky At Night has a classic Bond Movie ring to it. he also said that filming would have been done in Ontario, Canada and there was a large stunt involving the Ontario Tower as well as a huge hockey game and skiing/winter sports sequences. What do you guys think?

Of course we have no way of knowing if this is valid or not. But it seems like such a throwaway reveal that it makes me think it might just be. I guess if Bond turns out to be legitimately titled Red Sky At Night(why?) there is a decent chance that Zack Snyder will be brining us Kal El! Whether its the real deal or not, what do you think of the title? Remember even though most people refer to the reboot at the moment as Man Of Steel, this was only the working title back when the movie was first announced.

Kevin Smith turns Sundance on it’s head…

Posted on 24 January 2011 by TH3 No08

There was a lot of hype and hyperbole leading up to Kevin Smith’s premiere of Red State at Sundance and all that quickly became an afterthought when Smith told Hollywood to go fuck itself and bought his own distribution right for 20$. Smith had announced earlier in the year that he would auction of the rights to his movie directly after the premiere and drew a ton of interest for what was sure to be a public spectacle and did not disappoint.

When can you see Red State? Well if you’re willing to shell out anywhere from

Rumor: Bond 23 Title Revealed?

Posted on 21 January 2011 by Christian

The Sun claims to have learned of the title for the upcoming Bond film and the rumor has also revealed a possible setting.

The ever unreliable UK tabloid, The Sun, has posted amongst casting rumors of Rachel Weisz, that the title of the 23rd Bond film will be Red Sky At Night.

Bleeding Cool, while trying to confirm the rumor, uncovered a forum post on Bond fan site ajb007 that corroborates The Sun’s claim:

Hi, new here guys, nice to find such a cool site. Im close friends with an art director in the film industry, i wont mention his name but he has worked closely with production designer Michael Carlin and is about to start work in Canada on Kal-El, the next Superman movie. What do you guys think?

Personally, I’m not too convinced, although Canada would be a new setting for the franchise. I’d take this with a huge grain of salt and all that.

Also, “Kal-El, the next Superman movie” thing, perhaps the production name for the Synder film?

Marvel Studios Once Again Developing The Black Panther

Posted on 21 January 2011 by Christian

Marvel taps Mark Bailey to pen The Black Panther adaptation.

THR is reporting that Marvel Studios has hired Mark Bailey to pen an adaptation of The Black Panther that will be produced by Kevin Feige. The Black Panther (aka) T’Challa King of Wakanda, is a long time member of The Avengers who will themselves, be hitting the big screen next summer. The Black Panther first appeared in 1966 in the pages of The Fantastic Four.

Bailey, who’s credits include The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon may seem like an odd choice for The Black Panther to some. Marvel expects Bailey to bring realism and grittiness to the project.

The Black Panther was reacquired by Marvel in 2005 when it absorbed many character licenses from Lionsgate. In 2003 Lionsgate bought Artisan who had previously acquired the rights from Columbia who had planned on making a Black Panther film during the 90′s with Wesley Snipes attached.

FALL(ing)OUT: A Post-Apocalyptic Love Story

Posted on 21 January 2011 by mjones

Dear Fallout,
We’ve been together a long, long time now. We’ve been through a lot together. I remember when we first found each other. You were so young back then. I was a young kid in the Desert Rangers at the time, and you taught me how to repair Toasters, and occasionally find guns in them. God that seems like a lifetime ago, almost like it happened to someone else in a different universe.

Hey you remember that one time we found that Tardis out in the middle of the desert? That was pretty awesome; Too bad we couldn’t get in there. Or the time we spent too long wandering the desert, and Vault 13 ran out of water? That was pretty shitty, but we reloaded and persevered. And then after we saved their Blue-Jumpsuited asses TWICE, they refused to let us back in. The vault was home, and they sent us into exile… Assholes. So many Memories, huh?

Hey! I know what I wanted to talk to you about! When I was trying to Help Arroyo, and find the G.E.C.K., remember that loincloth I used to wear? I’m still “em-bare-assed” about that… get it? “Em-BARE-Assed“… Get It? Huh? Huh? Heh. Left nothing to the imagination. Oh man, we always end up regretting the fashion choices of yesterday, don’t we? Except for that leather armor, with the one arm torn off, and the one shoulder pad. That still rocks, and hell, between you and me, I’m wearing it right now.

And all the people we’ve known. Most of ‘em are gone now. I don’t want to get morbid here, but everyone we’ve known ends up dying, and its usually just us in the end. You… me… and Dogmeat. Hey, wait a minute. I just realized something; How long are dogs supposed to live? Because by my reckoning, Dogmeat is like… um… let me see here… 120 YEARS OLD?!? Wait wait wait! That CAN’T be right. Lemme see here… um… (scribble-scribble) carry the five… minus 22… no wait… (erase!) Uh… Fuck. Yeah thats right. 120 Years. How the hell does he have the strength to even walk? You know what? A dog that old is mighty suspicious. I think one day, he’ll open his little doggy mouth, and start talking. He’s gotta be a mutant-dog, right? A hyper-intelligent, mutant dog. I think in the end, in a bizzarre twist, he’ll end up being the one who’s orchestrated everything thats ever happened to me, and he will let me know that right before he stabs me in the back.

God I hope that doesn’t happen, that would suck. He’s been our only constant friend all these years. Well… Him and, you know… Harold. But Harold doesn’t really count. He’s just a mopey, depressed half-tard that we occasionally run into. I mean it’s always nice to see him, but he’s More of an acquaintance. By the way, between you and me, when you weren’t looking, he tried to get me to eat his head-fruit. He was oddly insistent about it. Kinda creeped me out really.

We had our good times. And we had our bad times, right? We saw a lot of combat with the Brotherhood Of Steel, and we learned their… “Tactics” for lack of a better word, but it felt somehow empty. We didn’t talk too much then, and I had a feeling that even though things were okay, that that was the beginning of the end for us.

And then it happened… We broke up. You and I were through. I thought, and hoped it was going to be a clean-break, but things are never that easy. You kept coming around, showing up unexpectedly, sometimes we thought we were going to get together again, but at least a couple of times we were smart enough to stop before we even got started again. We planned that trip to Van Buren, out west, but that fell through. I felt like a such a F.O.O.L. for believing in you when you suggested we try an Online only relationship. You were just messing around with my heart, and dropped me faster than a defective mini-nuke.

We spent years apart, our paths never crossing. I can honestly say that I never thought I would see you again, the only thing left to me; nostalgic memories of all our time together. I had moved on.

And then you came back. You were living way out in D.C. now. I didn’t think I ever wanted to see you again… boy was I wrong. When you came to me and asked me to go with you to the east coast, I went. Damn right, I went. And Oh, the times we had again. Walking under the full Moon; The Ink Spots playing on the radio; It was magic. It felt like the old days all over again, and you seemed fresh and new. I just wanted to get you all to myself, and explore every inch of you, mapping your every curve and detail in my head. I could spend hours, hell DAYS with you and not bat an eye. And I loved every minute of it. Shit… How many heads have we blown up with a single bullet? A Hundred? A Thousand? Too many to count. It’s been great, don’t let anyone say that it hasn’t.

But we need to talk.

I thought it was kind of weird that you wanted to move to Vegas. Its a big decision, but we always have had a problem settling down in one place, so I said okay. You assured me that it would be just as good as D.C., and it is. We’re doing all the same stuff, and hell it even looks the same. I thought it was supposed to look different out here, but I guess I was wrong. They also have WAY less music out here than I’d hoped for. I keep hearing the same 6 songs over and over… but that’s all besides the point!

I want my life back. What I’m saying is that I’ve spent a whole hell of a lot of time with you in D.C., and now I’ve been here for over 38 Hours, and I haven’t even been to Vegas yet. Now I know it sounds on the surface like I have a gambling problem, but that’s not what I’m implying. After opening like the 7-Millionth container last night looking for Ammo or Stimpacks that we can use, I came to a realization.

I want to leave. I desperately want to go home to my wife and children, if they’ll have me back. Maybe they miss me. I want to stop what we’ve been doing, but every time I think I’m going to, you suck me right back in, and I end up with another night gone and sleep-dep the next day. I’m saying that I am just a man… A Man who is too weak to stop.

So I’m asking you… no, I’m begging you, please just end this, and LET. ME. GO. I promise that if you can just do that, then you will have saved my sanity, and that of my loved ones. Will you please set me free?

What?

What’s that?

There’s a building 5 miles away we can see from here?

And it’s probably got a lot of containers that are full of stuff?

Okay. This’ll be just one last quick jaunt… right?

Right.

Death of Major Character Changed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

Posted on 20 January 2011 by Christian

JK Rowling apparently has approved the change for the upcoming film.

Most of you have read the Harry Potter series and know what to expect, but that has all changed now that JK Rowling has approved of a change in the death of one of the main characters.

Andrew Ackland-Snow, the art director for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, told Cine Premiere Mexico a little bit about the change. Obviously if you haven’t read the books,
