The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The Hunger Games is scheduled to hit theaters March 23rd, 2012.

New Posters For ‘Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Amazing Spider-Man’

Posted on 12 December 2011 by Christian

The first poster for Marc Webb‘s new ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ has been released.

The photo features new Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield, climbing up a wall as he casts the shadow of a spider below.

It’s definitely a darker tone than any of Sam Raimi’s films in the franchise but we’re not quite sure what ‘untold story’ the poster is promising considering the film will be a reboot of one of the most popular superheroes’ origin story.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. have released a brand new poster for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ which features both Batman and Bane in one image.

It carries the tagline “The Legend Ends.”

The Poster Wall: The Woman In Black

Posted on 21 October 2011 by TH3 No08

In his first post Harry Potter role Daniel Radcliffe is going horror in a remake of a British made for tv film. The trailer looks kind of creepy but I’m really digging this poster. What did they see? Why are their eyes scratched out? Who dresses their kids like that? We’ll find out soon enough…

SYNOPSIS:

In this supernatural thriller, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a widowed lawyer whose grief has put his career in jeopardy, is sent to a remote village to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased eccentric. But upon his arrival, it soon becomes clear that everyone in the town is keeping a deadly secret. Although the townspeople try to keep Kipps from learning their tragic history, he soon discovers that the house belonging to his client is haunted by the ghost of a woman who is determined to find someone and something she lost…and no one, not even the children, are safe from her vengeance.

Poster Wall Special: Hobo With a Shotgun: Poster process

Posted on 14 October 2011 by Christian

So I ran across this very cool blog post by James White, who is an amazing artist.. He goes through his process of doing a poster and happens to do it with a Hobo With A Shotgun theme. It is very cool and if you know me I am a little parcial to Hobo since I first saw it and met Jason Eisner at the Grindhouse 101 Competiton back in 2007. Just to name drop a little… Anyways, enjoy!

If you’ve seen my Back to the Future presentation at any point this year you would have seen me tell the story of Hobo With a Shotgun and my involvement with the design of some of the elements. I’ve posted about the film before and talked about it on my broadcasts several times, but up until now the full behind-the-scenes gear was only shown onstage. It’s about time I retire that section of the presentation to launch it online for everyone to see.

It’s my favorite story to tell, my favorite project in recent years, and best of all it was all done for friends in order to help them with their project. That’s what it’s all about. We support each other around these parts and Dartmouth blood is thick, especially when being splattered onscreen. I was thrilled when Jason Eisener and Rob Cotterill asked me to design a Hobo poster. While not being the official one used, it was a wildly entertaining challenge. So lets load those barrels and get to it.

• Some Hobo poster thumbnails. Working out a concept.

• Full Rutger Hauer drawing, blue lead and ink.

• Digital concept mock-up #1.

• Digital concept mock-up #2.

• Digital concept mock-up #3. Boom!

I knew early on that I was going to digitally paint the poster, something I’ve been wanting to attempt for a while. A huge challenge, totally out of my comfort zone. I’ve been a big fan of guys like Drew Struzan and Bob Peak for a long time, so doing something like that offered up some unique obstacles which challenged my entire proces. Before I got to building the actual poster in Photoshop, I needed to have things planned out properly and extensively.

Shown above are my original concept sketches and digital mock-ups. I even went as far as doing a meticulous drawing of Rutger Hauer to get myself in the groove of capturing likeness in Photoshop. Again, something I’m pretty unfamiliar with. The digital mock-ups were unsuccessful from a design standpoint, but man, I still love that one of the Hobo blowing away the person looking at the poster. So funny.

• Palette samples.

The great thing about working with the guys is they have a really specific style in mind, and they can express it in art samples. Crazy helpful. Shown above are some color examples Jason sent over that he used as inspiration for the lighting and palette of Hobo. Bright pinks and purples are top priority, which I didn’t know since I hadn’t seen the film at this point. This really put me on the right path. Here are some digital mock-ups I put together with the new colours in mind.

• Digital concept mock-up #4.

• Digital concept mock-up #5.

I started some new mock-ups with the proper palette and vibe and things started to click. Again drawing on inspiration from Struzan, I collaged together some of the photos Jason sent over to get the composition nailed down. I can see a big Star Wars influence in there, which was fine since me and the Hobo guys are all kids of the ’80s. VHS culture, man. You might be able to see a Bill Sienkiewicz vibe in there too, I was looking at old Dazzler comic covers at the time.

• Vector colour palette test.

Once the composition was coming along, I decided to do a vector colour study before moving onto the digital paints. Having the photos were great, but I wanted to dilute the composition to know exactly what my palette was going to be. So I got rid of the details and roughed up the above image using simple shapes to represent the areas.

I should also mention that you’re going to see changes in layout and characters as we go. The poster was a total work in progress in terms of what characters would go where, even during the final stages.

• Starting in with the digital paints, blocking stuff in.

• Close-up of paint progress. More texture and detailing.

After all that planning I was finally able to leap into Photoshop and start building the paints. I took a semester of foundation paint at a local art school back in 2004, and even though I didn’t enjoy it that much I took from it some important techniques which lent itself quite well to Photoshop. I learned to block things in and layer colours on top of one another to build palettes and texture. Very helpful at this stage.

Shown above are my initial steps. Really rough and simple at tis point as I mapped things out. A big challenge was to let the brush in Photoshop act like paint. It was oksy to get a bit messy with it and let strokes fall outside the lines. It suited the content, y’know?

• Digital paint mid-point.

After many, many hours of digital painting the palette was starting to get away from me, as shown above. It didn’t have the life those initial compositions had and the colours were not near what I wanted. I did the “morning after” test, you know, when you sleep on it then wake up and hate what you’ve done? Yeah that. So I took an entire day, ripped apart my layers one by one and started adjusting everything. Added some new effects and dry brush textures to this thing.

By the end of the day, this is where I was:

• Palette and atmosphere revision.

Now we’re talking. This was where I wanted to be. I dug it, the guys dug it. We were off to the races.

• Final Hobo With a Shotgun poster.

So after a great many hours painting textures, splatters, characters, lighting and effects … the final poster emerged. The scene changed as I went, but it captured that initial flavour we all really wanted. Something fun, and cool, which would be very happy on the cover of a sun-bleached VHS box.

In the end, even though this wasn’t used as the official Hobo poster or box art, I wouldn’t trade this project for the world. It was created for a killer movie, a killer Dartmouth movie, for my friends. And it offered up some real challenges which put me in a place I wasn’t familiar with. I learned a huge amount by working on this thing, about the medium and about myself as a creator. To date I’ve only printed 2 of these things at full movie poster size, but more are in the pipeline for sure. You’ve been warned. There you have it.

And finally, if you haven’t seen Hobo With a Shotgun yet … what the hell are you waiting for?

The Poster Wall: Paranormal Activity 3

Posted on 20 September 2011 by TH3 No08

For a movie series whose previous release was pretty much panned by most critics, Paranormal Activity 3 is getting a great deal of hype. Perhaps it’s the directing team of “Catfish” bringing a different point of view that’s created a new level of interest but it remains to be seen if they can squeeze anything new from this quickly tiring story line. Here’s the first look at the poster for Paranormal Activity 3 and if this is any indication of what’s to come it looks to be just more of the same. Find out for yourself on October 21st 2011.

The Poster Wall: The Walking Dead Season 2

Posted on 14 September 2011 by TH3 No08

While you wait with baited breath to see if season 2 is going to be a total disaster without Frank Darabont you can check out this cool poster from the upcoming season. It features what looks to be Rick Grimes running with gun in hand toward Hershel’s farm. Here’s some advice to the new show runner, stick with the comic. Everything good about last season was from the comic, it only started to suck when you went rogue. Just keep that in mind and you’ll do fine.
Check out the show when the second season premieres next month on AMC.

The Poster Wall: Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil

Posted on 01 September 2011 by TH3 No08

Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is one of my favorite movies of the year and is certainly worthy of being picked up when it hits Blu-Ray on Nov. 28th 2011. Here’s a very cool poster from MTV.com that was created for the film that really does a great job capturing the fun and over the top horror humor that makes Tucker and Dale one of the most original releases of the year.

The Poster Wall – Cowboys and Aliens

Posted on 21 June 2011 by TH3 No08

Here’s a very cool poster to check out and add to your collection. It’s for the upcoming sci-fi/western Cowboys and Aliens, starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. The best part of this whole poster design is the awesome tag line, First Contact, Last Stand. This film is really building some nice hype, let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint.

In 1873 Arizona, a loner named Jake Lonergan awakens with no memory of his past and a mysterious shackle around his wrist. He enters the town of Absolution where he learns that he is a notorious criminal wanted by many people, including Colonel Dolarhyde, who rules the town with an iron fist. Absolution soon faces an even greater threat when alien spaceships attack the town. While his shackle holds the key to defeating the aliens, Lonergan must ally with Dolarhyde and other former enemies to make a stand against them.

The Poster Wall #6

Posted on 22 April 2011 by TH3 No08

We’ve got a very interesting collection of movie posters this week that’s as varied as it is large. Lots of summer movie stuff in here as well as some cool foreign poster versions. Enjoy…

Up first are a couple of wide format posters for some summer stuff. I’m digging these posters more and more but the number of POTC posters are getting silly.

Up next is a very cool collection of Russian posters for the upcoming movie Cars 2. Very interesting group showing the main locations of the film where the big races take place.

Here’s a couple of the worst movie posters I’ve seen in some time. Basic photo shop skills are lacking here. It’s no coincidence that these posters look very similar to the awful designs of the early Fast 5 posters. The fan made posters for this film were much better than this crap.

Like super hero films? Like foreign versions of posters? Then enjoy these foreign posters for two of the bigger summer movies coming this summer.

Here’s a random group of posters for some smaller films hitting theaters soon. When you’ve got a smaller film it’s even more important that you have a great poster just to draw attention to yourself and these do a great job of that. I’m especially impressed by the Devil’s Double poster. The Devil’s Double is a film chronicling the life of a man drawn into a world of violence and murder when he is cast as the new body double for Uday Hussien  before the invasion of Iraq. Very interesting poster for a very interesting movie.

And finally from Mondo Tees is a couple of posters for Pan’s Labyrinth that were given out at a recent screening of the movie. They continue to do incredible work on a weekly basis and I always look forward to seeing what they have coming up next.

The Poster Wall #5

Posted on 15 April 2011 by TH3 No08

This weeks edition of the poster wall contains some very cool stuff including a ton of horror movie posters and a large collection of character posters for The Hangover 2. Lets do it…

First up is the before mentioned Hangover collection as well as a cool international poster for the movie. I really dig the grittiness of the character pieces. Not super glossy so you really get a sense of what this movies gonna bring to the table.

Up next are a few poster for some big time kids movies hitting in the near future. The Rio poster is super colorful and full of characters that look like they are having a great time, just what you’d expect to see in a kids movie. The Cars 2 posters represent the two sides of what is going on in this  film. The first represents the mystery and intrigue involved and the second represents the international racing scene where the mystery in the story is taking place. Both look like good movies but I’m definitely digging the Bond style Cars 2 poster.

Another Pirates Poster? I’ve never seen so many posters for one movie…

Here’s a nice collection of horror/thriller movie posters. The Cabin in the Woods poster is for a Joss Whedon written/produced horror film that has been sitting on the shelves for several years now as it continues to struggle to find distribution. By all accounts it’s a good movie that has had a ton of bad luck getting out there. The Perfect Host has David Hyde Pierce playing a crazy person turning the tables on a would be criminal and Stake Land has a crazy post apocalyptic vampire vibe going on. Both look very cool. No comment on the Fright Night poster, there was absolutely no reason to remake that movie.

And finally Mondo Tees makes their weekly appearance in the column with two very bloody posters paying homage to some classic films. (Is Scream classic horror?) Either way I love both of these posters and consider them by far the two best of this weeks collection.

The Poster Wall #4

Posted on 08 April 2011 by TH3 No08

This week releases were rather weak comparatively speaking. There’s some cool stuff in here but not up to what we’ve had the last few weeks. Let’s jump in…

Up first is an interesting collection of posters from the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles relaunch from Nickelodeon. Interesting art style, I’m curious if this is more of what we’ll see in the new series…

Staying with the animated theme are some interesting pieces from some upcoming animated short films. Year Zero is a short film that is premiering at Tribeca. It’s the story of a loner who finds himself trapped in his apartment in NYC during a zombie outbreak. The Monster of Nix is a short film starring Tom Waits and Terry Gilliman by director Rosto about a troubled boy who fights a destructive monster in the village of Nix. Very stylish and interesting group…

Up next are a few from some sci-fi horror movies coming this summer. Apollo 18 is a found footage film about a group of astronauts who find something on the moon that wasn’t supposed to be there. described as Blair Witch meets Moon. The poster from Priest looks cool but has little to do with the plot of the movie it’s from. Maybe some vampires would have helped…

This weeks WTF award goes to these two posters. The Asylum puts out knock off films to capitalize on big budget movies of a similar ilk and their poster for Thor is actually not half bad. I imagine the actual movie is a rotten turd but the poster’s pretty good. Insidious is one of the better horror movies I’ve seen in a while but this poster is absolutely atrocious. It just looks amateurish and cheap. Maybe that’s what they were going for but I doubt it.

We’ve got two from Mondo Tees this week as they continue to put out some of the best movie posters in the business. Up first is a Roger Rabbit print from their Disney series. There is a limited run of 210 and they went on sale today, April 8th and they are already sold out. Here’s an awesome Hobo With A Shotgun poster as well. It really captures the elements that have made this film a cult hit before it’s even hit theaters…

That’s it for this weeks collection, more great posters next week…
