Amazon launches new Online Movie Studio

Posted on 18 November 2010 by Kevin Minke is getting into the movie business by opening Amazon Studios, with the goal of using the Internet to put fresh movies on the big screen. The new Internet movie studio will allow writers to upload screenplays to its website where the global Internet audience can read them and offer feedback, or producers/directors can use them to make test movies. The test movies, which must be at least 70 minutes in length, can also be uploaded.

Amazon Studios will also award monthly cash prizes to the top submissions of $100,000 for the best movie each month and $20,000 to the two best scripts. There will also be an annual award of $1 million for the best movie and $100,000 for the best script. In all, the company expects to hand out up to $2.7 million for submissions received by Dec. 31, it said on its website.

Movies have been developed pretty much the same way since talkies were considered cutting-edge. But here at Amazon Studios, we believe 21st-century technology creates opportunities to make and share movies and scripts more easily than ever. We invite you to:

  • Win money. Amazon Studios will award a combined $2.7 million in our first year’s worth of monthly and annual contests for the best scripts and movies. There is no charge to participate.
  • Get noticed. Your work will be shared with a global community of filmmakers and fans, who can offer revisions and advice. Screenwriters can see their words come to life as full-length test movies made by directors vying for our $100,000 monthly awards.
  • Get your movie made. The goal of Amazon Studios is to work with Hollywood to turn the best projects into major feature films.

With partners like Warner Bros who has a first-look deal with Amazon Studios, winners of these contents will also get a meeting with development executives that will consider releasing these films theatrically. With the cost for making movies coming down and the with avenues like this to pursue, I for one hope to see some really original movies come from this studio. Hopefully they’ll be good as well. What do you guys think? Leave a comment and let us know. [Good Gear Guide]

Natalie Portman Writing Screenplays Now

Posted on 12 November 2010 by Christian

Not content to just star in a “chicks empowered by having cavalier attitudes towards sex just like boys do” comedy, Natalie Portman has gone and written one of her own. Portman and a college friend are shopping around a script called BYO, short for Bring Your Own, about two twenty somethings who throw a party where all attendees have to bring a single dude. It’s being described as a “female-themed Superbad,” and Anne Hathaway is reportedly interested in co-starring with Portman, though no word yet on which of them will be obsessed with drawing penises on everything.
