Ever wonder what job you would hold in the Star Wars Universe?

Posted on 02 February 2011 by TH3 No08

If you’ve ever wondered what job you would hold were you living in the Star Wars Universe (and haven’t we all at one time or another) then check out this handy chart I found over at onlineschools.org. Very cool. Incidentally, and much like the real world, there are no podcasting jobs in the StarWars universe. Maybe I’ll try the Potter Universe…

[Rec] Genesis casting news…

Posted on 28 January 2011 by TH3 No08

A few years ago I stumbled across the small spanish horror movie [REC]. It was a verite style horror movie, filmed from various helmet cameras and television cameras to capture the action taking place in a small apartment complex as a zombie/demon/rabies outbreak happened. It was awesome, I loved it, I couldn’t wait to see the sequel [REC] 2 when it was announced and I was not dissappointed when I did see it. Now I’m equally excited to see that they are moving forward with two more films that will fill in the gaps between the first two films as well as spread the story to the world outside the apartment building. Let the awesomeness ensue…

Via geektyrant.com

Blooding-Disgusting has reported that Leticia Dolera has been cast alongside Diego Martin for [REC] Genesis. Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero will split directing duties for the final two films in the franchise, [REC] Genesis and [REC] Apocalypse.

Plaza will direct [REC] Genesis, which will return to the origin of the original infection that caused humans to turn into zombies and is scheduled to hit in the fall. [REC] Apocalypse will be directed by Balaguero and will end the [REC] series with the pandemic spreading to unknown proportions and is scheduled to hit in the fall of 2012.

Plot:

The action in [REC] GENESIS encompasses the events of the first two films and after the sense of claustrophobia previously experienced. The action now takes place miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight, giving the film an entirely fresh yet disturbing new reality. The infection has left the building. In a clever twist that draws together the plots of the first two movies, this third part of the saga also works as a decoder to uncover information hidden in the first two films and leaves the door open for the final installment – the future [REC] Apocalypse.

Judi Dench to reprise role of M in James Bond Sequel

Posted on 28 January 2011 by TH3 No08

It looks like Dame Judi Dench will reprise her role as M in the upcoming James Bond Sequel. Dench announced the news at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards  last night not saying much in the way of details but relaying that she was looking forward to starring opposite Daniel Craig and to working with Director Sam Mendes again…

Dame Dench has appeared in every film since GoldenEye. The only other actors to play M were Bernard Lee  in nine films (Dr. No through Moonraker) and Robert Brown who appeared in four of the films (Octopussy through License to Kill).

Bond 23 begins production soon and has a release date of November 9, 2012.

Hangover 2 images released

Posted on 18 January 2011 by TH3 No08

Here’s a couple of cool screen shots from The Hangover 2 featuring a dishevled Ed Helms, a nearly bald Zack Gafanakis and a sweaty (but still cool in his sunglasses) Bradley Cooper. The plot of this movie has been held pretty close to the chest so far but it looks to involve a monkey on a wire (see second picture). This is on my list of must see movie for 2011 and if it’s half as funny as the first one it will be awesome.

Synopsis…

In the follow-up to the record-breaking hit comedy “The Hangover,” Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined.

Red State trailer hits the interwebz…

Posted on 23 December 2010 by TH3 No08

Kevin Smith hates the press but apparently loves the interwebz cause that’s where he dropped an early teaser for his latest flick “RED STATE”. We’ve discussed on the podcast over the last few months our general feelings regarding this film and his approach to distribution and marketing of it and this trailer doesn’t really change any feelings I have for what he’s trying to do. Smith lists the Weinsteins in the credits (Harvey Boys) so I’m assuming he’s got distribution so we may not be treated to the public spectacle of a post screening auction like he promised but as long as it gets out there I guess that’s really all that matters. The trailer looks interesting, lots of action, creepy looking small town folk, and lots of random gun fire.  We’ll see how it all comes together in March when it is slated for release.

Drive Angry 3d trailer is here!

Posted on 23 December 2010 by TH3 No08

It’s been a slow week here at the noob news but santa’s elves dropped a little something in our stocking early. The Drive Angry 3d trailer is here! This looks like a crazy hodpodge of supernatural  meets gone in 60 seconds being molested by a grindhouse double feature featuring crazy Nicholas Cage  in 3d to boot. Enjoy!

A felon (Cage) breaks out of hell for one last chance at redemption: to prevent the cult who murdered his daughter from sacrificing her baby in three days’ time. He’s aided by a young waitress (Heard) and her ex-boyfriend’s muscle car, and together the duo will have to face down the leader of the cult, the police, and a killer known as “The Accountant” — who  wants to return him to the Devil.

DRIVE ANGRY 3D opens on February 25.

A Look Back at Those Who Have Passed in 2010

Posted on 20 December 2010 by Christian

I thought it would be interesting to see which celebrities have passed on in 2010, so I’ve compiled a list of those who have passed on.

Recently, we in the “geek” universe lost two iconic figures in Irvin Kershner, director of The Empire Strikes Back, and actor Leslie Nielsen (Airplane). So I decided to look back over the rest of the year to see who else has passed on. For the sake of this being TheNoobNews.com, I will do my best to keep the dearly departed within the realm of our topics, and maybe just toss in a few others for good measure.

James Aubry Actor (Lord of the Flies)
Michael Been Musician (The Call)
Glen Bell Businessman (Founder of Taco Bell)
Barbara Billingsly Actress (Leave it to Beaver)
Manute Bol Athlete (Philidelphia 76ers, Washington Bullets)
Tom Bosley Actor (Happy Days)
Stephen J. Cannell Film/TV Producer (Creator of The Rockford Files)
Art Clokey Cartoonist (Creator of Gumby)
Gary Coleman Actor (Different Strokes)
Robert Culp Actor (I Spy)
Tony Curtis Actor (Some Like it Hot)
Jimmy Dean Entrepreneur/Singer (Jimmy Dean Sausages)
Ronnie James Dio Musician (Black Sabbath, Dio)
Blake Edwards Director (The Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
Doug Fieger Musician (The Knack)
John Forsythe Actor (Charlie’s Angels)
Frank Frazetta Artist (Creator of Conan cover Art)
James Gammon Actor (Character Actor)
Greg Giraldo Comedian (Comedy Central Roasts)
Peter Graves Actor (Mission: Impossible)
Paul Dedrick Gray Musician (Bassist for Slipknot)
Bob Guccione Businessman (Founder of Penthouse Magazine)
Guru Musician (Rapper from Gang Starr)
Cory Haim Actor (The Lost Boys)
Dennis Hopper Actor (Apocalypse Now, Easy Rider)
Lena Horne Musician (Stormy Weather)
Irvin Kershner Director (The Empire Strikes Back)
Andrew Koenig Actor (Growing Pains)
James MacCarthur Actor (Hawaii Five-O)
Simon MacKorkindale Actor (Casualty)
Kevin McCarthy Actor (Invasion of the Body Snatchers)
Rue McClanahan Actress (Maude, Golden Girls)
Fred Morrison Inventor (The Frisbee)
Patricia Neal Actress (The Day the Earth Stood Still)
Ronald Neame Director (The Poseidon Adventure)
Leslie Nielsen Actor (Airplane!, The Naked Gun)
Arthur Penn Director (Bonnie and Clyde)
Zelda Rubenstein Actress (Poltergeist)
JD Salinger Author (The Catcher in the Rye)
Glenn Shadix Actor (Beetlejuice)
Peter Steele Musician (Type O Negative)
George Steinbrenner Businessman (Owner of the New York Yankees)
Gloria Stuart Actress (Titanic, The Invisible Man)
Ari Up Musician (The Stilts)

Obviously, there are many, many others who left us this year, but these are the few that stood out to me. We lost many talented actors, savvy businessmen, unique inventors and incredible musicians. Join me in “pouring one out” for these fine folks.

It’s True Grit review time @ thenoobnews…

Posted on 17 December 2010 by TH3 No08

It’s hard for me to review a Coen brothers movie and not hold them to a higher standard than I hold most other film makers. It’s not fair to them that I consider their body of work up to this point the most well produced, expertly written, and superbly directed collection of films I have ever seen.  At least three of their movies abide in my all time top ten with number one being No Country For Old Men, followed closely by The Big Lebowski and Fargo coming in somewhere around the ten spot. I love the worlds they create, the characters that inhabit them, and the dialog the speak. They talk like the people in my dreams talk, each bit of dialog containing something important that will lead me to the next scene without giving too much away and allowing me to think and wonder what’s coming next while watching it unfold on the screen in front of me.Perhaps that’s why this film didn’t entirely work for me. It’s not that it’s not a good film, as far as this years batch of films go True Grit far and away outshines 90 percent of what I’ve seen in 2010. This has been an abysmal year for films and this movie is one of the few bright spots for this year. The problem is it just doesn’t hold up to the legacy the Coen brothers have built over the past twenty six years and it may have more to do with the actual source material than the directors themselves.

As I’m sure you know, the film True Grit is a remake of the classic 1969 western directed by Henry Hathaway and starring John Wayne, Kim Darby, and Glen Cambell. What you probably don’t know is True Grit the movie was based on a serial story in the Saturday Evening Post written the previous year by Charles Portis and quickly adapted for the silver screen. The characters within this story are all interesting, they all serve a purpose but none quite held my interest or attention the way that Tommy Lee Jones did as Ed Tom Bell or Jeff Bridges did as The Dude or even M. Emmet Walsh does as the delicious villain Loren Visser in Blood Simple.

The story the Coen’s tell is a straight forward, streamlined version of the 1969 film, many say it’s more akin to the novel but I have not read it to compare notes. It’s the story of a young girl who sets out to capture the man who killed her father with the help of a drunkard Marshall played by Jeff Bridges and a braggadocios Texas Ranger played by Matt Damon. Once this is established in the opening first act, the film moves quickly from one scene to the next and never lingers too long, giving us the sense that time is short and the job at hand must be done quickly and without haste. What it doesn’t do is really give us a sense of why it’s so important that the young star of this film, Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, must personally avenge her fathers death.

In the 1969 version of the film the relationship between father and daughter is shown in the opening scenes as a strong one, the daughter helps run her fathers day to day business, advising him on pony prices and such so he can make good deals and not get ripped off when he heads off to town to do business. It is a great personal loss of not only a father but a partner of sorts. The Coen Brothers’ version starts off quickly with Mattie getting off a train and claiming her father’s body and steamrolls into the story from there. Because of the pace of the movie and how quickly it moves into the second act we never really get a sense that Mattie is mourning or that she is even particularly angry about her father’s death. She seems quite distant at times when speaking about her father and I never really got a sense for why she was tracking down her father’s killer for any other reason than she felt it was her duty and if she didn’t do it no one else would.

As we move through the film we are introduced to several interesting/quirky characters who move in and out of the periphery of the story, serving the purpose of moving the story forward and giving the little bits of information that move us to the next scene. This is something of a Coen Brothers calling card and they certainly don’t disappoint in this department. This movie is littered with interesting characters whose small parts jump off the screen and pull you directly into this movie. From Barry Pepper as Lucky Ned Pepper the outlaw gang leader and his mangy posse (complete with an animal noise impersonator) to a bearded old man on a mule wearing a bears skin complete with head and claws and offering free dental work in the woods of Arkansas, the Coen Brothers have done an excellent job surrounding the stars of this movie with interesting and capable cast that does not disappoint. The excellent attention to detail on the characters really stands out, especially the teeth. The wild west was apparently not a place where you took care of your teeth and there are some awful sets of chompers in this movie.

My biggest fault with this movie was that it just felt rushed. I felt no real chemistry between Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Haille Steinfled. The seemed to be doing a job and nothing else. There was very little connection between them and at times they seemed to leave and rejoin the group at random, based entirely on the mood of the others in the camp only to return at the opportune moment to save the day. Perhaps another thirty minutes or so of character time added throughout this movie would have fixed the few problems present but like I said earlier, ultimately this was still a very good movie. Just not Coen Brothers good. I’ve come to expect a little more from them as I’m sure most people have but don’t let that scare you off from seeing this film. When Oscar Sunday comes around I’m sure we’ll hear more that a few names called for this True Grit and they will certainly deserve it, after all it’s a Coen Brothers film, and on their worst day they make movies most could only dream of making.

the noob has spoken

Tree of Life Trailer is Online!

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

The trailer forTerrence Malick’s long awaited film The Tree of Life is finally here, via Apple. While the trailer has been attached to copies of Black Swan in limited release, this is the first time an official high def version of the trailer has been made available online. The beautiful trailer doesn’t give us much of an idea of the story just yet, but the imagery and poetry of youth, growth and life is enough to get me excited. Featuring Brad PittSean Penn and a breakout performance from Jessica Chastain, this drama looks like it’ll be well worth the long wait.

Watch the first official trailer for Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life:

You can also watch The Tree of Life trailer in High Definition over on Apple

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as BadlandsDays of Heaven andThe Thin Red LineThe Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 50′s. It follows the life journey of eldest son Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years (Penn) as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack, as an adult, finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking out answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s images we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. Fox Searchlight is bringing The Tree of Life to theaters on May 27th.

‘Fast Five’ Trailer Hits

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

Fast Five, the fifth Fast and the Furious movie, comes out April 29. Here’s the trailer, just released today.

The cool thing is that is it actually manages to give a little bit of zest to something that should be, by now, pretty lifeless.

See Shortlist for Lead in Universal’s ‘Snow White’

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

There’s big movement on Snow White and the Huntsman,Universal’s take on the suddenly hot fairy tale, which is the subject of several competing movie projects.

The studio, clearly angling to beat Relativity’s version, is in talks with Charlize Theron to play the evil queen and is having conversations with Michael Fassbender’s reps to take on the titular huntsman.

But who will nab the starring role of Snow White?

The studio initially thought of going with name actresses in that age bracket, making entreaties toward Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Saoirse Ronan, but is nowleaning toward going with a relative unknown and is holding screen tests in the next few days to find its leading lady. The stakes are high because, similar to Disney’s recent Alice in Wonderland adaptation, there will be stars in key roles, but the main pillar is going to be whoever ends up as the orphaned girl on the run.

Sources caution that depending on how the tests go, the studio can still reverse course and continue reaching out a bigger name. But for now, the actresses who have made Universal’s shortlist are:

– Riley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and daughter of Lisa-Marie Presley. She made her film debut playing Marie Currie in The
Runaways and recently wrapped a vampire flick with Kylie Minogue titled Jack
& Diane.

– Felicity Jones, an English actress currently seen as Miranda in Julie
Taymor’s The Tempest. She also played Margot Frank in BBC’s 2009 miniseries
The Diary of Anne Frank.

– Bella Heathcoat, whose major credit is the Australian soap opera
Neighbours.

– Alicia Vikander, a Swedish actress with mostly TV work under her hood.

[Pictured clockwise from top left: Keough, Jones, Heathcoat and Vikander.]

Apart from Keough, who is tethered to WME, none of the girls is known to
have American representation. So get to it, agents and managers!

‘Inception’ Easily Tops DVD, Blu-ray Sales Charts

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

Summit’s “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” was the No. 2 best-selling disc.

Warner Home Video’s Inception flew off retail shelves its first week in stores, displacing Summit Entertainment’s Eclipse as the top-selling disc for the week ending Dec. 12.

DreamWorks/Paramount’s Shrek Forever After, meanwhile, topped Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, largely due to high demand at Redbox and Netflix. Paramount is one of the only studios that doesn’t impose a rental window on its new releases for the two rental services, which together generate nearly 60% of all rental transactions.

Shrek Forever After debuted at No. 3 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, right behind the third Twilight movie.

Walt Disney Studios’ Toy Story 3 remains a steady holiday season seller, holding on to its No. 4 position on the sales chart in its sixth week of release.

On Nielsen VideoScan’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Inception scored an easy victory, with 65% of its unit sales coming from the high-def disc. In its second week of release, Eclipsedropped down a notch to No. 2, but it only sold 30% as many Blu-ray Discs as Inception.

Inception debuted at a lowly No. 14 on the rental chart, which isn’t surprising, given that the title is only available at brick-and-mortar retailers its first month of release. At both Blockbuster and independent video rental stores belonging to the IDEA group, Inception was No. 1.

Sandra Bullock Is People’s ‘Most Intriguing’ Person of 2010

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

Sarah Palin, Nicki Minaj also made the list, as did Mel Gibson, who ended up in the “Hall of Shame.”

Oscar winner Sandra Bullock was singled out from a headline-making crowd of notables that included everyone from James Franco andNatalie Portman to the Chilean minors and tops People‘s list of the 25 most intriguing people of 2010, reports Reuters. The magazine’s special issue hits stands Friday with the star of The Blind Side on its cover.

People‘s honor as Woman of the Year tops a rocky few months for Bullock, who won an Oscar in March, which was overshadowed a week later by the tabloid-baiting travails of her ex-husband Jesse James‘ reported infidelities. In August, Forbes listed the 46-year-old star of The Proposal as the highest paid actress in Hollywood.

Among the other talent that made the list are rapper Nicki Minaj and Sarah Palin, who was named the “Big Gun” of 2010.

Actor Mel Gibson made the list, too, under People‘s celebrity marriage coverage’s “Hall of Shame.”
