In a weekend that was expected to be a bit of a downer due to the Super Bowl it was actually a very strong weekend at the box office. Chronicle topped the weekend with 22 million beating out Daniel Radcliffe in his first role post Harry Potter. Both movies performed strongly saving what is usually a dreadful weekend at the movies.
Next weekend should be continue the uptick with big releases in “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” “Safe House,”"The Vow,” and the 3D release of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” hitting on the same weekend.
1. “Chronicle,” $22 million.
2. “The Woman in Black,” $21 million.
3. “The Grey,” $9.5 million.
4. “Big Miracle,” $8.5 million.
5. “Underworld Awakening,” $5.6 million.
6. “One for the Money,” $5.3 million.
7. “Red Tails,” $5 million.
8. “The Descendants,” $4.6 million.
9. “Man on a Ledge,” $4.5 million.
10. “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” $3.9 million.
Here’s another quick look at the upcoming Daniel Radcliffe film “The Woman In Black”. It’s the first film released starring Radcliffe since the Potter series concluded last fall and I imagine this role will go a long way in letting us know whether there’s a career in film for Daniel Radcliffe after the end of Harry Potter.. WIB is a remake of a British TV film from the seventies and is quite a different role that we are used to seeing Radcliffe in. Judging from this 30 second TV spot look for a lot of creepy imagery, foggy marshes and more that a few jump scares. “Woman in Black” hits theaters February 3, 2012.
The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.
