Bill Paxton Set To Direct Big Screen Version Of Kung Fu

Posted on 01 November 2011 by Christian

Now not the Marvel comics character Shang-Chi, but a movie version of the ’70s Tv show which starred David Carradine and also had a comic book series. Deadline have the details..

I’m sure any CBMer of a certain age, or even those wise enough to catch some re-runs, remember the Kung Fu Tv series fondly. It starred the late David Carradine as a Shaolin Monk possessed of great martial arts skills as he wanders the American wild west in search of his brother, adventure and enlightenment. It was pretty damn awesome. And now Legendary Entertainment are bringing us a big screen version with none other than Hudson himself at the helm..

Bill Paxton is in talks to direct Kung Fu, a screen adaptation of the classic 1972 TV series that starred David Carradine. Paxton, who

COMICS: Marvel Reveals Plans For Ongoing Dexter Series By Creator Jeff Lindsey!

Posted on 17 October 2011 by Christian

They may now be owned by Disney, but that doesn’t mean Marvel have gone soft! At yesterday’s “Cup ‘O Joe” panel, it was revealed that the creator of the TV show will write an ongoing comic book series featuring the serial killer…

Well, this should please fans of Dexter! However, if like me you prefer the TV show over the novels, this may not come as such great news due to the fact that the planned comic book series will be written by the creator of the character and set in the world of Jeff Lindsey’s books – and as you may know, they’re pretty different from the Showtime series starring Michael C. Hall! Many thanks to Comic Book Resources for the following.

The panel wrapped with Quesada saying, “I don’t know if you guys are fans of this little series called ‘Dexter’…” He then revealed that novelist Jeff Lindsay will bring the popular character to comics with an all-new ongoing series with new stories set in the world of the “Dexter” novels (as opposed to the TV series).

And thanks to the guys over at Bleeding Cool for this photo taken at the panel in New York.

Marvel Studios 2014 Plans. Who, What, And Just Cause…

Posted on 23 September 2011 by Christian

What are the potential films that Marvel could release in 2014 and which projects currently in development make sense for the May 16, 2014 release date.

Recent interviews with Chris Evans [Captain America] have revealed that the inevitable sequel to the smash summer hit will likely come in 2014. Furthermore, Evans revealed that Cap likely won’t cameo in any of the post-Avengers sequels due to the structure of his contract. Also, I think because The First Avenger is a period movie, having Steve Rogers cameo in Iron Man 3 or Thor 2 would seriously screw up the continuity of Marvel’s films [looking at you Fox]. With one 2014 movie being released May 16, 2014, just two weeks after the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man and another on June 27, 2014, it’s safe to assume that the Cap sequel will be the movie released on the 27th in order to capitalize on the following weeks Fourth of July holiday. So that leaves the May 16, 2014 release date as the big mystery. What could Marvel Studios possibly be planning that could match the hype and fanfare that Spider-Man will surely bring?

Well this past summer has seen a lot of news and developments come out of Marvel regarding their plans for life beyond Hulk, Captain America, Iron-Man, and Thor. Back in August we were told Marvel just had the Doctor Strange script delivered by Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Beginning in March of this year, the number of actors coming out and expressing interest in Luke Cage has to mean that this one is coming down the Marvel pipeline soon. Also in August, we were all somewhat stunned to learn that Guardians of the Galaxy were suddenly in active development at Marvel Studios. Back in April, Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright also joined the dubious “in development” game when they moved their thimble a few paces past GO by handing in their second draft of the Ant-Man script. Lengthening the the growing list of Marvel movies in development, was the news that Raw Leiba recently met with Marvel about reportedly portraying Black Panther rogue, Erik Killmonger. Oh, and don’t forget those Namor The Sub-Mariner teasers that have been carefully sprinkled in Iron Man 2.
Based on these developments, we have a current list of potential Marvel movies containing:

  • Ant-Man
  • Black Panther
  • Doctor Strange
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Luke Cage
  • Namor The Sub-Mariner

Of course, there is also the possibility that Marvel could be planning a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie to spin-out of The Avengers or maybe even another Hulk movie. But more than likely, the other 2014 movie will be based on one of the character listed above. The character that makes the most sense here is Black Panther. He’s a character with a deep history and has strong ties to the Avengers which would work well with Marvels apparent plan to have individual character story-lines all weave back towards assembling an Avengers team. Plus, you can’t follow a movie like Spider-Man with a risky character that the general populace isn’t overly familiar with. If Marvel continues to follow their current plan for the Avengers sequel, then Black Panther makes the most sense out of all the movies currently in development. Of course if certain rumors prove to be true, then Guardians of the Galaxy also would make sense for Marvel but that’s a step in breaking away from the Avengers formula. Instead of a solo hero movie that leads back to a second Avengers film, the Guardians of the Galaxy already contains a team element, one that’s as different from the Avengers as apples are to oranges. What’s smart about this approach is that it truly opens up story line possibilities for Marvel to go beyond Earth and beyond it’s interwoven earthbound stories. What would be extremely cool, is if Marvel started a totally different space continuity, completely independent but running concurrent to what’s happening with Cap, Thor, Hulk, etc. You could then have the space storyline and earthbound storyline all come together for one seriously monumental cinematic comic book movie event. At the same time, it would be a neat mechanism for escaping the tight constrictions continuity places on the director and script writers who have been quietly voicing complaints ever since Marvel saw a golden opportunity with a harmless, last-second cameo in Iron Man. Speculatively speaking, the wonderful continuity Marvel has created has probably also cost them the directorial vision of both Jon Favreau and Kenneth Branagh, maybe even Brian Kirk. Continuing on this path, the creative constraints of continuity are probably the reason Marvel’s looking to bring in young, relatively inexperienced directors for their upcoming projects. Directors who won’t have the successful back-history to balk at heavy studio influence of how stories must unfold and what subplots have to be included. But that’s a different conversation all together and it’s just my personal musings.

With Iron Man 3 [May 3, 2013], Thor 2 [July 26, 2013 release date] coming out a year after the Avengers and Captain America set for a 2014 release date, we can rest assured that the other 2014 film won’t be one of the big 3. While there’s still a chance that the Avengers will setup the Hulk to steal the show and use that momentum to steamroll him into another solo film, it’s really unlikely given the past financial figures and overall critic/fan perception of the last two attempts. It’s looking like Marvel will be introducing a new hero in 2014 and it’s someone that has the potential to derail or invigorate the Marvel Studio superhero franchise. Which of the above heroes has the following and origin story to handle that pressure?

As for the other potential movies on the list, I’ll leave it to you guys to argue the merits and detractions of releasing them in 2014 below, in the comments section. Sound off in an orderly and civilized fashion!

Confirmed: Marvel’s Strikeforce: Morituri To Become Feature Film

Posted on 20 July 2011 by Christian

The short-lived 1980s Marvel Comics series Strikeforce: Morituri will reportedly be turned into a feature film.

The short-lived 1980s Marvel Comics series Strikeforce: Morituri will reportedly be turned into a feature film. I’ll admit, I’m unfamiliar with this comic series, but the premise sound’s really interesting.

Strikeforce: Morituri, which ran from 1986 to 1989, was set on an Earth nearly conquered by resource-stealing alien invaders [The Horde]. A scientific process is designed to give a squadron of humans super-powers to fight the aliens, but it also dooms them to die within a year. The series followed the heroic exploits of the strike force who knew they’re doomed regardless of how they fare against the aliens.

According to Variety, the screen rights to the title were snagged by Waterman Entertainment who have tapped the series’ creator-writer, Peter B. Gillis, to script the movie along with Connor Cochran. Jeff Beard will produce. The trade says Waterman Entertainment aims to start production this December.

Note:While the setting of Strikeforce: Morituri resembles no future seen in any other Marvel title, the Horde appear to have gathered trophies from residents of the Marvel Universe, including Captain America’s Shield, the Silver Surfer’s board and Galactus’s helmet, as well as shelves of what appear to be power batteries used by DC’s Green Lantern Corps. At the time, that appeared to be an in-joke rather than a serious plot point. But it is now considered serious since Marvel has designated the Strikeforce Morituri universe as Earth-1287 of its shared multiverse, as seen in Marvel Alternate Universes 2005.

Strikeforce: Morituri is a comic book series published by Marvel Comics from 1986 to 1989. The series was created by writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Brent Anderson.

The premise is that aliens have invaded Earth and nearly succeeded in conquering it and stripping it of its resources. A scientist discovers a process which can provide humans with superhuman powers, effectively creating a group of defending superheroes. However, the process would also ensure that the empowered humans would die within a year of being empowered. The series thus focused on the heroism of the main characters in fighting the invaders, while living with the knowledge that their fates were sealed regardless of whether or not they prevailed.

The title comes from the Latin phrase: “Morituri te salutamus” (We who are about to die salute you!), a salute that according to popular legend (not academically agreed) was uttered by Roman gladiators before battle in the arena. The subtitle of the comic was “We who are about to die”.

Gillis and Anderson left the series within two years. The series was eventually ended after 31 issues, under the tenure of writer James Hudnall and artist Mark Bagley.

Captain America: The First Avenger Set To Have A BIG Impact At Comic Con!

Posted on 06 July 2011 by Christian

While we’ve already heard rumblings that Captain America will have a presence at the San Diego Comic Con, we now have a few more details including “a military salute” and special screening of the movie…

Marvel may be one of the many film studios scaling back their presence at this years San Diego Comic Con, but just because there won’t be a panel in Hall H, doesn’t mean they don’t still have something big planned. According to an exclusive report over at The Hollywood Reporter, Captain America: The First Avenger will be there in full force…as long as Chris Evans isn’t too busy working on The Avengers of course!

Well, there will be no panel, but Heat Vision has learned that, while details are still being worked out, Marvel and Paramount, which is distributing the film, are planning a military salute that would involving star Chris Evans and soldiers stationed in San Diego.

Evans would also attend the Con to do to signings at the Marvel booth.

Additionally, whispers suggest a special Con screening of the film.

One of the details needed to make all this happen is smoothing out Evans’ schedule, so who knows how much of this will come to pass.

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Stanley Tucci as Abraham Erskine and Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in 3D on July 22, later this year!
