All Con 2011: Neil Kaplan Interview

Posted on 22 March 2011 by mjones

Experienced Throat Artist Neil Kaplan takes a minute with The Noob News to talk about his start, what he will and will not say as Optimus Prime, and why there is no whipping of voice actors in LA.

Some of Neil Kaplan’s credits are Optimus Prime, Tychus Findlay from Starcraft II, and more Video Game and Anime voices than you can shake a stick at… go on, try it! I dare you…

P.S.- Here’s the video to which he was referring in the video… where he’s talking about the video… and stuff…

All-Con 2011: Richard Hatch, “Apollo/Zarek” from Battlestar Galactica!

Posted on 21 March 2011 by mjones

Matthew Jones heads to All-Con 2011 in Dallas, TX to furiously fap all the steampunk girls with Mr. Richard Hatch of Battlestar Galactica fame.

P.S.- On a side note, while many may always remember Mr. Hatch as “APOLLO” from Battlestar Galactica, he will always live in my mind as “Dan” from “Prisoners Of The Lost Universe”.

Robert Pattinson As Daredevil Rumors Surface; Said To Be Similar In Tone To Batman Begins!

Posted on 17 March 2011 by Christian

Apparently, there’s some “talk” that the Twilight actor is being looked at to reteam with David Slade on Daredevil, while new details on the tone and story have also emerged…

“The West Hollywood Resnorter” over at Moviehole has a very interesting piece up about David Slade’s planned Daredevil movie (said to be a continuation, rather than a reboot) but two things in particular caught my eye.. The first, is the revelation that the movie will be similar in tone to Batman Begins, while the mention of a bad guy trying to destroy Daredevil certaintly fits in with the rumor that they’re thinking of basing it on Frank Miller’s “Born Again” series.

Slade’s pitch, I’m told, is said to be a “close cousin” of some of the other superhero movies out there in the market place (I believe he’s referring to films like “Thor” and “Captain America” which are bright, boisterous blockbuster types that skip on the gloom and go straight to the boom!) – which shouldn’t surprise anyone. “It’s a bit Batman Begins. The bad guy will learn who Daredevil really is and tries to destroy him – but not via the usual methods.”

Second, was the mention of there being “talk” about Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson being linked to the role. Seeing as he’s worked with Slade before and is rather popular with a certain demographic, it’s not hard to believe that he’d be considered (and there is something of a resemblence) but as we’re talking about the guy who directed 30 Days Of Night and a character like Matt Murdock, I don’t see it happenning!

And yes, with David Slade given the job, there’s “some kind of talk” about Robert Pattinson – who, with the “Twilight” series winding up, is going to be looking for a new well-paying gig – playing the part of Matt Murdock – – -which, I have to say, I don’t dislike the idea of.

What do you guys think about all of this? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place, and head on over to the site to read the article in its entirety.

Visual FX reel from HEREAFTER

Posted on 23 February 2011 by TH3 No08

I’m a big fan of behind the scenes featurettes especially FX breakdowns so I was super stoked to share this. I haven’t seen HEREAFTER yet but seeing the FX work on this reel makes me want to check it out…

A drama centered on three people — a blue-collar American, a French journalist and a London school boy — who are touched by death in different ways.

Film Composer John Barry Now Living-Impaired

Posted on 31 January 2011 by mjones

Film-Composer, the legendary John Barry is no longer breathing air, reported USA today. Responsible for composing the scores of films such as Midnight Cowboy, Dances With Wolves, Out Of Africa and 11 James Bond films, this is a man who’s music will live forever, even though he did not.

Pay your respects, and watch one of these films that he helped to make memorable in the extreme, and for once think very hard about how integral the music is to the theatrical experience.

FALL(ing)OUT: A Post-Apocalyptic Love Story

Posted on 21 January 2011 by mjones

Dear Fallout,
We’ve been together a long, long time now. We’ve been through a lot together. I remember when we first found each other. You were so young back then. I was a young kid in the Desert Rangers at the time, and you taught me how to repair Toasters, and occasionally find guns in them. God that seems like a lifetime ago, almost like it happened to someone else in a different universe.

Hey you remember that one time we found that Tardis out in the middle of the desert? That was pretty awesome; Too bad we couldn’t get in there. Or the time we spent too long wandering the desert, and Vault 13 ran out of water? That was pretty shitty, but we reloaded and persevered. And then after we saved their Blue-Jumpsuited asses TWICE, they refused to let us back in. The vault was home, and they sent us into exile… Assholes. So many Memories, huh?

Hey! I know what I wanted to talk to you about! When I was trying to Help Arroyo, and find the G.E.C.K., remember that loincloth I used to wear? I’m still “em-bare-assed” about that… get it? “Em-BARE-Assed“… Get It? Huh? Huh? Heh. Left nothing to the imagination. Oh man, we always end up regretting the fashion choices of yesterday, don’t we? Except for that leather armor, with the one arm torn off, and the one shoulder pad. That still rocks, and hell, between you and me, I’m wearing it right now.

And all the people we’ve known. Most of ‘em are gone now. I don’t want to get morbid here, but everyone we’ve known ends up dying, and its usually just us in the end. You… me… and Dogmeat. Hey, wait a minute. I just realized something; How long are dogs supposed to live? Because by my reckoning, Dogmeat is like… um… let me see here… 120 YEARS OLD?!? Wait wait wait! That CAN’T be right. Lemme see here… um… (scribble-scribble) carry the five… minus 22… no wait… (erase!) Uh… Fuck. Yeah thats right. 120 Years. How the hell does he have the strength to even walk? You know what? A dog that old is mighty suspicious. I think one day, he’ll open his little doggy mouth, and start talking. He’s gotta be a mutant-dog, right? A hyper-intelligent, mutant dog. I think in the end, in a bizzarre twist, he’ll end up being the one who’s orchestrated everything thats ever happened to me, and he will let me know that right before he stabs me in the back.

God I hope that doesn’t happen, that would suck. He’s been our only constant friend all these years. Well… Him and, you know… Harold. But Harold doesn’t really count. He’s just a mopey, depressed half-tard that we occasionally run into. I mean it’s always nice to see him, but he’s More of an acquaintance. By the way, between you and me, when you weren’t looking, he tried to get me to eat his head-fruit. He was oddly insistent about it. Kinda creeped me out really.

We had our good times. And we had our bad times, right? We saw a lot of combat with the Brotherhood Of Steel, and we learned their… “Tactics” for lack of a better word, but it felt somehow empty. We didn’t talk too much then, and I had a feeling that even though things were okay, that that was the beginning of the end for us.

And then it happened… We broke up. You and I were through. I thought, and hoped it was going to be a clean-break, but things are never that easy. You kept coming around, showing up unexpectedly, sometimes we thought we were going to get together again, but at least a couple of times we were smart enough to stop before we even got started again. We planned that trip to Van Buren, out west, but that fell through. I felt like a such a F.O.O.L. for believing in you when you suggested we try an Online only relationship. You were just messing around with my heart, and dropped me faster than a defective mini-nuke.

We spent years apart, our paths never crossing. I can honestly say that I never thought I would see you again, the only thing left to me; nostalgic memories of all our time together. I had moved on.

And then you came back. You were living way out in D.C. now. I didn’t think I ever wanted to see you again… boy was I wrong. When you came to me and asked me to go with you to the east coast, I went. Damn right, I went. And Oh, the times we had again. Walking under the full Moon; The Ink Spots playing on the radio; It was magic. It felt like the old days all over again, and you seemed fresh and new. I just wanted to get you all to myself, and explore every inch of you, mapping your every curve and detail in my head. I could spend hours, hell DAYS with you and not bat an eye. And I loved every minute of it. Shit… How many heads have we blown up with a single bullet? A Hundred? A Thousand? Too many to count. It’s been great, don’t let anyone say that it hasn’t.

But we need to talk.

I thought it was kind of weird that you wanted to move to Vegas. Its a big decision, but we always have had a problem settling down in one place, so I said okay. You assured me that it would be just as good as D.C., and it is. We’re doing all the same stuff, and hell it even looks the same. I thought it was supposed to look different out here, but I guess I was wrong. They also have WAY less music out here than I’d hoped for. I keep hearing the same 6 songs over and over… but that’s all besides the point!

I want my life back. What I’m saying is that I’ve spent a whole hell of a lot of time with you in D.C., and now I’ve been here for over 38 Hours, and I haven’t even been to Vegas yet. Now I know it sounds on the surface like I have a gambling problem, but that’s not what I’m implying. After opening like the 7-Millionth container last night looking for Ammo or Stimpacks that we can use, I came to a realization.

I want to leave. I desperately want to go home to my wife and children, if they’ll have me back. Maybe they miss me. I want to stop what we’ve been doing, but every time I think I’m going to, you suck me right back in, and I end up with another night gone and sleep-dep the next day. I’m saying that I am just a man… A Man who is too weak to stop.

So I’m asking you… no, I’m begging you, please just end this, and LET. ME. GO. I promise that if you can just do that, then you will have saved my sanity, and that of my loved ones. Will you please set me free?

What?

What’s that?

There’s a building 5 miles away we can see from here?

And it’s probably got a lot of containers that are full of stuff?

Okay. This’ll be just one last quick jaunt… right?

Right.

VHS Hell: Xtro

Posted on 20 January 2011 by mjones

This episode on the new video series “VHS Hell with Matthew Jones” we look at XTRO, the best 1983 British Sci-Fi Movie to feature the eating of snakeeggs and face rape in a tentacle fashion ever! Unlike all those other 1983 British Sci-Fi Movies to feature the eating of snake eggs and face rape in a tentacle fashion, this one is enjoyable.

Making it all the more enjoyable is the excellent Boob-age provided by the simply delightful Maryam d’Abo (making her theatrical debut here), whom you might remember from The Living Daylights and ShootFighter.

Matt Damon Talks Bourne 4!

Posted on 16 January 2011 by Christian

The actor who plays Jason Bourne has stated his desire to make a fourth movie – but accepts that it might take another five years or so before it actually happens.

Talking at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Friday, Damon said:

I really hope it’s going to happen…. [but] it’s really up to Paul Greengrass, the director. I’ve always said I won’t do it without him and I think it would be a bad idea to do it without Paul.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, last October Universal announced that it was developing another film with Michael Clayton and Gilroy at the head, but Damon was never consulted.

The star continued:

I think Paul’s probably going to do one or two other films that he’s got kind of cooking but after that [maybe they would start working on a Bourne film]…. I think it’s kind of the thing where enough time has passed that I think it won’t matter if we wait five more years to do it.

Finally, he closed by saying:

“We just want to make sure if we do it, that we do it right. There’s been a lot of pressure for us to do it obviously but that’s that moment I think where you got to step back and make sure you’re not making a mistake. So when it feels like the right time, I think Paul would be open to doing it.”

The Best of Video Game Voice Acting. Thanks Japan!!!

Posted on 03 January 2011 by mjones

"He wrote it in his blood." "Way to go kid!"

Ahhhh… Voice acting. Games these days need it. Unless you’re making a retro-styled, soon-to-be-showered-with-critical-Praise Indie Game, it’s pretty tough to tell a story without it. Even the most money tight budget titles I’ve played in the last two years have featured pretty passable voice acting. But it wasn’t always so Kids. And it was doubly-wasn’t so for Japanese games.

There’s a lot of reasons we could list for this. Different cultures; Hiring educational translation firms to read your lines for you; or Even just getting the one one fat, American programmer that’s on your Japanese-Based development team to do 80% of the characters. There’s a lot of methods at fault for the wackiness Japan has peed all over our consoles, like some kind of (probably) Japanese originating fetish or gameshow. But lets not look at the end results as bad, so much as we look at them as Awesome. Think about it, won’t you? Thank you.

Red State trailer hits the interwebz…

Posted on 23 December 2010 by TH3 No08

Kevin Smith hates the press but apparently loves the interwebz cause that’s where he dropped an early teaser for his latest flick “RED STATE”. We’ve discussed on the podcast over the last few months our general feelings regarding this film and his approach to distribution and marketing of it and this trailer doesn’t really change any feelings I have for what he’s trying to do. Smith lists the Weinsteins in the credits (Harvey Boys) so I’m assuming he’s got distribution so we may not be treated to the public spectacle of a post screening auction like he promised but as long as it gets out there I guess that’s really all that matters. The trailer looks interesting, lots of action, creepy looking small town folk, and lots of random gun fire.  We’ll see how it all comes together in March when it is slated for release.

Tree of Life Trailer is Online!

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

The trailer forTerrence Malick’s long awaited film The Tree of Life is finally here, via Apple. While the trailer has been attached to copies of Black Swan in limited release, this is the first time an official high def version of the trailer has been made available online. The beautiful trailer doesn’t give us much of an idea of the story just yet, but the imagery and poetry of youth, growth and life is enough to get me excited. Featuring Brad PittSean Penn and a breakout performance from Jessica Chastain, this drama looks like it’ll be well worth the long wait.

Watch the first official trailer for Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life:

You can also watch The Tree of Life trailer in High Definition over on Apple

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as BadlandsDays of Heaven andThe Thin Red LineThe Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 50′s. It follows the life journey of eldest son Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years (Penn) as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack, as an adult, finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking out answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s images we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. Fox Searchlight is bringing The Tree of Life to theaters on May 27th.

‘Fast Five’ Trailer Hits

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

Fast Five, the fifth Fast and the Furious movie, comes out April 29. Here’s the trailer, just released today.

The cool thing is that is it actually manages to give a little bit of zest to something that should be, by now, pretty lifeless.

See Shortlist for Lead in Universal’s ‘Snow White’

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

There’s big movement on Snow White and the Huntsman,Universal’s take on the suddenly hot fairy tale, which is the subject of several competing movie projects.

The studio, clearly angling to beat Relativity’s version, is in talks with Charlize Theron to play the evil queen and is having conversations with Michael Fassbender’s reps to take on the titular huntsman.

But who will nab the starring role of Snow White?

The studio initially thought of going with name actresses in that age bracket, making entreaties toward Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Saoirse Ronan, but is nowleaning toward going with a relative unknown and is holding screen tests in the next few days to find its leading lady. The stakes are high because, similar to Disney’s recent Alice in Wonderland adaptation, there will be stars in key roles, but the main pillar is going to be whoever ends up as the orphaned girl on the run.

Sources caution that depending on how the tests go, the studio can still reverse course and continue reaching out a bigger name. But for now, the actresses who have made Universal’s shortlist are:

– Riley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and daughter of Lisa-Marie Presley. She made her film debut playing Marie Currie in The
Runaways and recently wrapped a vampire flick with Kylie Minogue titled Jack
& Diane.

– Felicity Jones, an English actress currently seen as Miranda in Julie
Taymor’s The Tempest. She also played Margot Frank in BBC’s 2009 miniseries
The Diary of Anne Frank.

– Bella Heathcoat, whose major credit is the Australian soap opera
Neighbours.

– Alicia Vikander, a Swedish actress with mostly TV work under her hood.

[Pictured clockwise from top left: Keough, Jones, Heathcoat and Vikander.]

Apart from Keough, who is tethered to WME, none of the girls is known to
have American representation. So get to it, agents and managers!

‘Inception’ Easily Tops DVD, Blu-ray Sales Charts

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

Summit’s “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” was the No. 2 best-selling disc.

Warner Home Video’s Inception flew off retail shelves its first week in stores, displacing Summit Entertainment’s Eclipse as the top-selling disc for the week ending Dec. 12.

DreamWorks/Paramount’s Shrek Forever After, meanwhile, topped Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, largely due to high demand at Redbox and Netflix. Paramount is one of the only studios that doesn’t impose a rental window on its new releases for the two rental services, which together generate nearly 60% of all rental transactions.

Shrek Forever After debuted at No. 3 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, right behind the third Twilight movie.

Walt Disney Studios’ Toy Story 3 remains a steady holiday season seller, holding on to its No. 4 position on the sales chart in its sixth week of release.

On Nielsen VideoScan’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Inception scored an easy victory, with 65% of its unit sales coming from the high-def disc. In its second week of release, Eclipsedropped down a notch to No. 2, but it only sold 30% as many Blu-ray Discs as Inception.

Inception debuted at a lowly No. 14 on the rental chart, which isn’t surprising, given that the title is only available at brick-and-mortar retailers its first month of release. At both Blockbuster and independent video rental stores belonging to the IDEA group, Inception was No. 1.

Sandra Bullock Is People’s ‘Most Intriguing’ Person of 2010

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

Sarah Palin, Nicki Minaj also made the list, as did Mel Gibson, who ended up in the “Hall of Shame.”

Oscar winner Sandra Bullock was singled out from a headline-making crowd of notables that included everyone from James Franco andNatalie Portman to the Chilean minors and tops People‘s list of the 25 most intriguing people of 2010, reports Reuters. The magazine’s special issue hits stands Friday with the star of The Blind Side on its cover.

People‘s honor as Woman of the Year tops a rocky few months for Bullock, who won an Oscar in March, which was overshadowed a week later by the tabloid-baiting travails of her ex-husband Jesse James‘ reported infidelities. In August, Forbes listed the 46-year-old star of The Proposal as the highest paid actress in Hollywood.

Among the other talent that made the list are rapper Nicki Minaj and Sarah Palin, who was named the “Big Gun” of 2010.

Actor Mel Gibson made the list, too, under People‘s celebrity marriage coverage’s “Hall of Shame.”
