Sequels I Pretend Don’t Exist

Posted on 30 September 2011 by Charles B. French

For my first column, I’d like to talk about sequels. I like sequels. When done right (Spiderman 2) they can expand upon the universe, explore the characters in greater depth than the original allowed, and resolve dangling plot threads from the previous film. When not done well, and sadly this is often the case, they not only are a terrible movie, they retroactively ruin the previous film. (On the plus side, they do allow a lot of actors to pay back what I assume are massive gambling debts.)

Thus, to preserve my sanity and continued enjoyment of the first installment(s), there are sequels I just pretend don’t exist. As far as I’m concerned, these movies were never green-lighted, scripted, cast, financed, catered, filmed, produced, and released. They didn’t happen, and a pox on anyone who tries to shatter my precious illusion. (And yes, I am aware of the irony that writing about movies I pretend don’t exist violates my own rule. I’m sure we can move past it.)

So let’s take a look at some sequels that, after this writing, I will go back to pretending that they didn’t happen. They can rejoin all my other repressed memories. They’re having a party and want these memories to bring Jenga.

Marvel Studios 2014 Plans. Who, What, And Just Cause…

Posted on 23 September 2011 by Christian

What are the potential films that Marvel could release in 2014 and which projects currently in development make sense for the May 16, 2014 release date.

Recent interviews with Chris Evans [Captain America] have revealed that the inevitable sequel to the smash summer hit will likely come in 2014. Furthermore, Evans revealed that Cap likely won’t cameo in any of the post-Avengers sequels due to the structure of his contract. Also, I think because The First Avenger is a period movie, having Steve Rogers cameo in Iron Man 3 or Thor 2 would seriously screw up the continuity of Marvel’s films [looking at you Fox]. With one 2014 movie being released May 16, 2014, just two weeks after the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man and another on June 27, 2014, it’s safe to assume that the Cap sequel will be the movie released on the 27th in order to capitalize on the following weeks Fourth of July holiday. So that leaves the May 16, 2014 release date as the big mystery. What could Marvel Studios possibly be planning that could match the hype and fanfare that Spider-Man will surely bring?

Well this past summer has seen a lot of news and developments come out of Marvel regarding their plans for life beyond Hulk, Captain America, Iron-Man, and Thor. Back in August we were told Marvel just had the Doctor Strange script delivered by Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Beginning in March of this year, the number of actors coming out and expressing interest in Luke Cage has to mean that this one is coming down the Marvel pipeline soon. Also in August, we were all somewhat stunned to learn that Guardians of the Galaxy were suddenly in active development at Marvel Studios. Back in April, Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright also joined the dubious “in development” game when they moved their thimble a few paces past GO by handing in their second draft of the Ant-Man script. Lengthening the the growing list of Marvel movies in development, was the news that Raw Leiba recently met with Marvel about reportedly portraying Black Panther rogue, Erik Killmonger. Oh, and don’t forget those Namor The Sub-Mariner teasers that have been carefully sprinkled in Iron Man 2.
Based on these developments, we have a current list of potential Marvel movies containing:

  • Ant-Man
  • Black Panther
  • Doctor Strange
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Luke Cage
  • Namor The Sub-Mariner

Of course, there is also the possibility that Marvel could be planning a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie to spin-out of The Avengers or maybe even another Hulk movie. But more than likely, the other 2014 movie will be based on one of the character listed above. The character that makes the most sense here is Black Panther. He’s a character with a deep history and has strong ties to the Avengers which would work well with Marvels apparent plan to have individual character story-lines all weave back towards assembling an Avengers team. Plus, you can’t follow a movie like Spider-Man with a risky character that the general populace isn’t overly familiar with. If Marvel continues to follow their current plan for the Avengers sequel, then Black Panther makes the most sense out of all the movies currently in development. Of course if certain rumors prove to be true, then Guardians of the Galaxy also would make sense for Marvel but that’s a step in breaking away from the Avengers formula. Instead of a solo hero movie that leads back to a second Avengers film, the Guardians of the Galaxy already contains a team element, one that’s as different from the Avengers as apples are to oranges. What’s smart about this approach is that it truly opens up story line possibilities for Marvel to go beyond Earth and beyond it’s interwoven earthbound stories. What would be extremely cool, is if Marvel started a totally different space continuity, completely independent but running concurrent to what’s happening with Cap, Thor, Hulk, etc. You could then have the space storyline and earthbound storyline all come together for one seriously monumental cinematic comic book movie event. At the same time, it would be a neat mechanism for escaping the tight constrictions continuity places on the director and script writers who have been quietly voicing complaints ever since Marvel saw a golden opportunity with a harmless, last-second cameo in Iron Man. Speculatively speaking, the wonderful continuity Marvel has created has probably also cost them the directorial vision of both Jon Favreau and Kenneth Branagh, maybe even Brian Kirk. Continuing on this path, the creative constraints of continuity are probably the reason Marvel’s looking to bring in young, relatively inexperienced directors for their upcoming projects. Directors who won’t have the successful back-history to balk at heavy studio influence of how stories must unfold and what subplots have to be included. But that’s a different conversation all together and it’s just my personal musings.

With Iron Man 3 [May 3, 2013], Thor 2 [July 26, 2013 release date] coming out a year after the Avengers and Captain America set for a 2014 release date, we can rest assured that the other 2014 film won’t be one of the big 3. While there’s still a chance that the Avengers will setup the Hulk to steal the show and use that momentum to steamroll him into another solo film, it’s really unlikely given the past financial figures and overall critic/fan perception of the last two attempts. It’s looking like Marvel will be introducing a new hero in 2014 and it’s someone that has the potential to derail or invigorate the Marvel Studio superhero franchise. Which of the above heroes has the following and origin story to handle that pressure?

As for the other potential movies on the list, I’ll leave it to you guys to argue the merits and detractions of releasing them in 2014 below, in the comments section. Sound off in an orderly and civilized fashion!

On a day when Netflix put its new higher prices into effect one of their content providing partners Starz announced that they would end negotiations with Netflix and set an end date for when it would allow streaming on the Netflix site. February 28, 2012 will be the last day of their partnership.

From www.comingsoon.net

“Starz Entertainment has ended contract renewal negotiations with Netflix. When the agreement expires on February 28, 2012, Starz will cease to distribute its content on the Netflix streaming platform. With our current studio rights and growing original programming presence, the network is in an excellent position to evaluate new opportunities and expand its overall business.”

RUMOR: Yvonne Strahovski Cast As Ms. Marvel In The Avengers?

Posted on 07 February 2011 by Christian

An insider at Marvel has apparently leaked the news that Chuck star Yvonne Strahovski is the studios #1 choice for Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel in upcoming superhero epic, The Avengers

As you may already know, both myself and many others have been campaigning for actress Yvonne Strahovski to be cast as Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel for quite a while, and unbelievably it seems like our collective wishes might just be coming true! Strahotski, one of the top fan sites for the Chuck star, have apparently been sent a scoop revealing that she’s going to be cast in the role by Marvel Studios! Check out an excerpt from their report, and be sure to head on over to the site by following the link at the bottom of the page.

Though it’s not often that we get the scoop on anything here, I’ve just received information from a protected source inside Marvel that points to Yvonne Strahovski being cast in the upcoming Avengers movie as Ms. Marvel.

Could it be true?

I, for one, have long hoped to see Yvonne crop up in a comic book movie. She’s got the action chops to easily pull it off and it was really just a matter of time before the right character came along.

As with any anonymous tip-off like this, it’s worth taking it with a pinch of salt for the time being, and as someone who went as far as writing an editorial about why she’d be a good choice for the role, I’m going to hold off on celebrating just yet! However, I’m sure the site must have been convinced enough if they decided to actually post the scoop, so be sure to stay tuned for more updates as we hear them!

The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

The Stand coming to the big screen?

Posted on 01 February 2011 by TH3 No08

It looks like Stephen Kings (IMO) best work is finally gonna get the Hollywood treatment it’s fans have always clamored for. Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the book will make its way to the big screen via a Warner Bros. and CBS Films co-production. What’s yet to be seen is the size and scope of the story to be told. Stephen King’s “The Stand” is a monster of a book that could probably be turned into a 24 episode tv series. There are a ton of characters that come and go as well as major story arcs that just couldn’t be told in even a trilogy of  movies.

From Hollywood Reporter

The Stand is a story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters (such as the Trashcan Man and Mother Abigail) and overlapping story lines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like Randall Flagg.

The novel was originally published in 1978, but by the time it was re-released in 1990 with King adding and revising portions of the story, it has achieved cult-like status.

George Romero and Warners separately tried in vain to launch a movie adaptation in the 1980s, and a tone-downed version was produced as a six-hour miniseries by ABC in 1994. In recent years, Marvel Comics has been adapting the story to great acclaim.”

I enjoyed the miniseries when it was on but watching it now really dates it and shows the limitations that were put on it by censors and time restraints. I would be surprised to see anything different out of a modern take on it. Times have changed but not that much. This book is just too big to fit on the big screen. Bring it to AMC and let them do a series like they have done with The Walking Dead and then I’ll have a little more faith in this.

Judi Dench to reprise role of M in James Bond Sequel

Posted on 28 January 2011 by TH3 No08

It looks like Dame Judi Dench will reprise her role as M in the upcoming James Bond Sequel. Dench announced the news at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards  last night not saying much in the way of details but relaying that she was looking forward to starring opposite Daniel Craig and to working with Director Sam Mendes again…

Dame Dench has appeared in every film since GoldenEye. The only other actors to play M were Bernard Lee  in nine films (Dr. No through Moonraker) and Robert Brown who appeared in four of the films (Octopussy through License to Kill).

Bond 23 begins production soon and has a release date of November 9, 2012.

New Battle: Los Angeles poster foreshadows global invasion…

Posted on 25 January 2011 by TH3 No08

Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles will be dropping soon and the posters just keep getting better. I was thinking this movie was gonna be on a smaller scale but things are looking bigger and bigger with each bit of info we get.

The action epic stars Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena, and Bridget Moynahan and hits theaters on March 11th, 2011.

Synopsis:

For years there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011 what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.

Welcome to the show outline, here’s the rundown…

Intro

Quick Hits…

Movie news
Apparently Arnold has reported that he’s currently reading 3 scripts 1 is CRUSADE with Paul Verhoeven.   Then the one that he says he’s reading and particularly fond of… is WITH WINGS AS EAGLES!  written by Randall Wallace (Braveheart, We Were Soldiers fame) is based on the true life story about a German officer who does not agree with his surrounding Nazi party and instead helps the American POWs escape. Didn’t say what the third one was.

television news…
watched awesome tv show on pbs about the pioneers of television, focused on science fiction, early days of star trek and twilight zone, breaking ground and such…

Game news…
Batman Arkham Asylum news
an early look
A year after the events of the first game, Arkham’s former warden Quincy Sharp is now mayor of Gotham. With Arkham destroyed, Sharp has turned Gotham’s slums into a prison for Arkham’s inmates. When Two-Face threatens to execute Catwoman, Batman must break into Arkham City and put a stop to the madness.

Single-Player
The focus remains the main campaign (it’s unknown if it will include co-op play). The basics from the first game remain the same, but now players will need to identify enemies with information and avoid knocking them out in combat. The story is said to be darker and has more characters than in the first game, with the Boy Wonder among many believed to make an appearance.

The list of characters continues to grow, but here are the main players we know about:

* Two-Face
* Hugo Strange

Bruce Willis to expand role in next installment of Expendables…

Posted on 18 January 2011 by TH3 No08

Apparently while he was being ridiculed by Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes over the weekend, Bruce Willis had other things on his mind, mainly the fact that he would be joining Sylvester Stallone for the sequel to Expendables. Stallone has previously stated on his twitter account that Willis would have a much larger role to play in the sequel and it looks like it’s gonna happen soon. When speaking to Yahoo after the globes he had this to say…

“Apparently it’s going to happen this year,” he said.

When asked if he will be in it — as has been rumored — Bruce confirmed the news.

“As far as I know, barring any unforeseen circumstances, but yeah, I would love to be a part of it,” he said.

It also looks like Jean Claude Van Damme will be joining the fray as well, as long as Steven Segal isn’t involved. Apparently they don’t play nice together.

Hangover 2 images released

Posted on 18 January 2011 by TH3 No08

Here’s a couple of cool screen shots from The Hangover 2 featuring a dishevled Ed Helms, a nearly bald Zack Gafanakis and a sweaty (but still cool in his sunglasses) Bradley Cooper. The plot of this movie has been held pretty close to the chest so far but it looks to involve a monkey on a wire (see second picture). This is on my list of must see movie for 2011 and if it’s half as funny as the first one it will be awesome.

Synopsis…

In the follow-up to the record-breaking hit comedy “The Hangover,” Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined.

Noxville and Samberg to be the next 3 Stooges?

Posted on 07 January 2011 by TH3 No08

It looks like Johnny Noxville and Andy Samberg could possibly be joining Australian actors Shane Jacobson as the newest iterations of The Three Stooges. Deadline reports that the actors are on a short list for The Farrelly brothers on again, off again, on again film which at one time had Jim Carrey, Sean Penn, and Benecio Del Toro attached. For pure slapstick funny (which is what the 3 Stooges were) I take Noxville and Samberg over Penn and Del Toro any day.  We’ll soon see how this all turns out as shooting is scheduled to begin March 14, 2011.

Razzie Award Shortlist: Jonah Hex, Clash Of The Titans, The Expendables And More

Posted on 04 January 2011 by Christian

The Razzie noms are on their way. And for now we have a shortlist of several movies that may be honoured in the prestigious category of Worst film of the year. Click for the full list and the details..

The Golden Raspery Awards, or “The Razzies” are always a bit of fun. Every year they celebrate the very worst in film making. This year the nominations will be announced on January 26th but here are the shortlist of 12 films that could make the cut. There is only one true CBM(Jonah Hex) but many have spin off comics and have been covered here.

According to the Los Angeles Times Awards Tracker blog, the 12 finalists include ‘Little Fockers,’ ‘Sex and the City 2,’ ‘The Expendables,’ ‘Grown Ups,’ ‘Clash of the Titans,’ ‘Killers,’ ‘The Bounty Hunter,’ ‘Yogi Bear,’ ‘Jonah Hex,’ ‘The Last Airbender,’ ‘Vampires Suck,’ and ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.’ There is also a new category this year: worst eye-gouging misuse of 3-D. Among those eligible films: Piranha 3D, The Nutcracker in 3D and Resident Evil: Afterlife. (No Clash?) Also, Mickey Rourke is expected to receive a worst supporting actor for both The Expendables and Iron Man 2! That I do find a bit strange since I thought he was great in IM2 and about the only good thing in The Expendables! But different strokes I guess.

I haven’t seen all of the above movies but those I have I pretty much despised. What do you think of the shortlist?
