Becoming X

Posted on 16 March 2012 by lreed

It’s been awhile since I have heard Chris Corner’s voice, today was luck would have it I heard the sweet melody of the Sneaker Pimps with their song Bloodsport. I remember playing their cd in my very first car all during high school. It was then I became hooked to Chris’ voice and the addictive beat that is so submerged in his lyrics. The Sneaker Pimps broke up shortly after their album Splinter, however various sources would say that they never broke up at all, they just had a conflict with one of their band mates. Years went by and Chris went on to start his solo career under the name “IAMX.” He later came out with his first album “Kiss + Swallow,” which would lead his career into the spotlight in trip-hop. IAMX’ albums are dark and edge with an array of trip-hop beats intermingled among it. Since his first album in 2008 to present day he has four albums and in the studio working on his fifth album which has yet to be titled. Chris Corner is a true artist that has a very unique sound and style, which will leave you intrigued and wanting more. His latest album Volatile Times is very well produced however a personal favorite of mine is his second album “The Alternative,” which has number one songs on it such as; “President”, “Nightlife” and my personal favorite “Bring me back a dog.” If you are like me and loved the Sneaker Pimps then check out “IAMX,” because you might find a striking resemblance. I will leave you with my favorite song of his, “President,” (please keep in mind this is not one of his best music videos, just listen to the music).

Ryan Adams debuts new single Lucky Now

Posted on 23 August 2011 by TH3 No08

I’m pretty picky when it comes to music but I’m also loyal so when I find an artist who fits into my wheel house I tend to stick with them through the good times and the bad. Back in 2001 I came across a music show late one night called “Crossroads” featuring a fairly unknown singer songwriter by the name of Ryan Adams dueting with the legendary Elton John (and holding his own pretty well) and I immediately knew this was gonna be a beautiful relationship. He makes awesome music and I enjoy it, It’s as simple as that.
That’s not to say that he hasn’t tried my patience at times. His foray into space metal on last years Orion was certainly not my favorite album of 2010 but I knew if I just stuck around a little longer he’d be back to his old ways and it looks like Adams has done just that. His first song off of the October 11 2011 release Ashes & Fire called Lucky Now begins with a melodic blend of heartfelt lyrics and acoustic guitar that falls somewhere between Easy Tiger and Cardinology and evolves from there. A twisting turning story that unfolds in his voice and guitar, Lucky Now is a solid return to form for Ryan Adams for what looks to be a continued mutually beneficial relationship. Enjoy the first song and pre-order the album here.

Cassettes Won’t Listen just won’t listen…

Posted on 10 May 2011 by TH3 No08

Cassettes Won’t Listen who were previously know for their controversial/allegedly illegal “Ludacris Democracy”, a mash up of Ludacris raps over the instrumentation of Axel Rose’s Chinese Democracy which led to a cease and desist from the RIAA are back in the news again after the name of their latest album got out. They have now received a c and d letter from Kevin Spacey after naming their upcoming album after him. This guy is apparently smarter than the average bear though and dropped the K and was able to stay out of court. Look for EVINSPACEY to hit stores on June 21. That is unless there’s a guy named Evin Spacey out there who has a good lawyer…

Posted on 03 May 2011 by TH3 No08

Yesterday we previewed the new album by the beastie boys and today we’ve got a new song from The Lonely Island featuring Snoop Dog called “Turtleneck and Chain”. It’s exactly what you’ve come to expect from the guys, silly raps about stuff that isn’t normally funny but when dropped like this it is.

The album officially drops May 10, but you can pre-order it here.

App Junkie Gets Sentimental

SoundTracking
By: Schematic Labs
Price: FREE!

A song comes on the radio, you think, gosh I haven’t heard this in forever. I remember what I was doing, how old I was, what was happening. Music is very powerful that way. And who doesn’t like to share the stories they have that are tied to a great song. And though this app is fairly new, I liked the premise so much, I decided to give it a try.

SoundTracking by Schematic Labs gives you a way to share your music memories as they happen. Like Shazam, it has Music ID that will recognize a song as it plays. Or you can enter an artist and song through the search. You can add a photo of your memory to your share or pick from an assortment of artist and album images. You can even tag your soundtrack at a location, whether it be a city or specific venue.

The thing that makes SoundTracking so different is its social features. It basically does for music what Instagram did for photography. You can find and follow your friends and make new ones through the app, view and listen to their soundtracks and comment on their posts. And of course you can share through Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

The layout is very appealing. The interface is simple and stylish. It’s very functional and I am in love with the idea. I am a huge Instagram fan and am glad to see something just as intuitive to socially incorporate music. It is a great way to see what songs are trending and see the array of ideas about what people associate with music.  So, App Junkies, listen to your music and share it with the world with SoundTracking!

Compatible with any iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 4.0 or higher.

Rating: 4/5

PS3 brings music to your ears…

Posted on 17 February 2011 by TH3 No08

It looks like playstation 3 wants to take over every job your computer used to do but never did right.

This from PS3 Blog and Community

“Later today, “Music Unlimited” is going to be added to the PS3, but that isn’t the only device. It’s also going to be hitting internet enabled BRAVIA TV’s, Blu-Ray Disc player’s, Sony VAIO’s, and other PC’s along with some other devices like the PSP down the road. It seems like this is going to be a pretty cool addition, access to 6 million music tracks from one device that lets you play games, stream TV shows or even sport games is really making the PS3 a one stop shop. The service is going to come in two flavors. One is going to cost you $3.99 a month and the other is going to cost $9.99. Obviously you are going to be getting some extra content with the $10 price tag as opposed to the $4 dollar one, but that choice is yours. “

The service will be free for the first 30 days after that you will have to pay but it looks like a reasonable price to acess 6 million songs whenever you want. Check out the video below for more details…

Weezer’s State Farm Jingle Is Really, Really Good

Posted on 11 February 2011 by Christian

You will, most likely, have a two-part reaction to the video, above, of Weezer in the studio recording a jingle for State Farm. Part 1: “Ah, what the hell, Weezer? It’s like you’re sitting at home actively thinking of ways to make yourselves seem lamer. Would it have killed you to at least write a song for a commercial for something awesome, like vodka or blunt wraps or something?” Part 2: “Wait, hold on a second — this song is amazing.” And it is now that second part that Vulture would very much like you to focus on.

Yes, it’s incredibly odd that Weezer has chosen the occasion of a car-insurance-company jingle to momentarily recapture a sound that a vocal subset of their fan base has long clamored for (this basically sounds like a Pinkerton B-side, specifically “Getting Up and Leaving”). But isn’t the more important takeaway here the fact that Rivers Cuomo, who long ago evolved into a prolific, slick-hit-writing mercenary, is able to so convincingly ape his former self? Maybe, next time, he’ll actually do it on a Weezer album! Okay, sing along now: “Whenever you’re driving / and wherever you’re bound / on freeways and byways / the whole country round / you’ll feel better knowing / any time, any where / that like a good neighbor / State Farm is there.”

Continuing with their semi-fascinating quest … [Pitchfork/Tumblr]

Episode 22: Noob Radio (yes we changed our name)

Posted on 10 February 2011 by TH3 No08

This week on Noob Radio Richard and Christian discuss why Fox News hates video games, what big name actor is not returning to The Dark Night Rises, and all their favorite movie trailers that premiered during last sunday’s Super Bowl. All this and much much more on this episode of Noob Radio…

We changed the name of our show but everything else is still the same. No reason why, just thought this one sounded cooler…

Here’s this weeks rundown of the show…

Last Sunday was Superbowl regardless of game its about the commercials, 3 million dollars for 30 seconds…
Superbowl commercial favorites…

QUICK HITS…

Movie News…
Liam Neeson Will NOT Return As Ra’s Al Ghul In The Dark Knight Rises, what about Talia Al Ghoul, his estranged daughter and
batman love interest?

Michael Moore suing the Weinsteins
The movie grossed $222 million worldwide and became the top-earning documentary ever; Moore says the profits were supposed to
be split fifty-fifty, but the Weinstein’s used “bogus accounting methods” to funnel money to their own expenses, including
trips to Europe via private jet…
will this eventually lead to the studios being investigated for this type of accounting?

James Franco in Early Talks for ‘Oz’ After Johnny Depp Passes
The Oscar-nominated host of the Academy Awards is in early talks to star in Oz, the Great and Powerful, Disney’s prequel-ish
take onThe Wizard of Oz tale being directed by Sam Raimi.
is he too young for the role of the great oz? does anyone really care about the wizard of oz world anymore?

Video Games…
Fox News has warned parents off of the upcoming M-rated game Bulletstorm (calling it “the worst video game in the world”),
alleging that it and other games in the same vein are directly responsible for an increase in the incidence of rape.
first off bullet storm doesn’t even come out untile feb 22, how can it be responsible for rape when only a few people have
even played the game? do games make you violent? i’ve played violent games since 1985, the first video game i ever played, duck hunt, i spent hours trying to figure out how to shoot the dog who laughed at me when i missed, but i never omitted a violent act against another person that was even remotely inspired by a video game.

LG Wants PS3 Sales Banned in the U.S.
says sony violate several patents including the bluray player in the ps3, this comes after several back and forth lawsuits as
they each sued each other over various components they say violate each others patents…
what happens if LG wins and ps3s are banned, does the sky fall in? do they stop selling ps3 games?

Television News…
Super Bowl XLV averaged 111 million viewers and netted 162.9 total viewers, breaking the previous record for the most-watched
TV program in history. The game also had a 71 share — meaning that more than two-thirds of the televisions being watched in the country at that time were watching the Super Bowl on the Fox network. That’s the highest audience share for a Super Bowl since 1982, a time when there were far fewer television networks as competition. what makes the superbowl the biggest draw in tv? everybody else in television is down in rating yet the superbowl continues to rise… cosby at it’s height was 25 million viewers, now american idol is tops but barely gets 15 million viewers..
is it the influence of the internet, or is the amount of channels available?

R.I.P. The White Stripes

Posted on 02 February 2011 by TH3 No08

So apparently the White Stripes have decided to call it quits. They left this note on their website…

The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011,
their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any
health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about
the band and have it stay that way.

Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible
support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and
incredible career.

Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from
The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular
channels.

Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is
seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has
created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those
creations, with their feelings considered greatly.

With that in mind the band have this to say:

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong
to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is
that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your
involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White
The White Stripes

It’s the kind of nice breakup letter you always left your ex in the hope that you could “still be friends” but in all honesty you really just wanted to bang other people and didn’t want to have to explain that to your now ex. I have no problem with The White Stripes breaking up, actually I was pretty sure they hadn’t been together for quite some time. Jack had been touring with The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs and producing records with so many people that I’m sure he really didn’t have time to play house with Meg anymore anyway.

I’m not a huge White Stripes fan but I can certainly appreciate what they have brought to the world of music in the past 13 years. I had never heard of Jack White before he smashed in the face of the Von Bondies frontman Jason Stollsteimer in 2003 but the ensuing media circus and exposure following that event left me with a firm grip on who Jack and Meg White of The White Stripes really were. They were one of the greatest American rock bands to come along in a long, long time.

Other than their color coordinated red and black instruments and clothes, there was very little pretense involved with The White Stripes. Their music was stripped to its core, consisting of emotion, energy, passion, and little else. Hell, they didn’t even feel the need to have a bassist in the band. The dynamic combo of Jack White and Meg White on stage was pure chemistry in it’s sloppiest, passionate, and most intimate form.

When it was all said and done The White Stripes discography consists of six studio albums, one live album, two extended plays (EP), one concert film, one tour documentary, twenty-six singles, and fourteen music videos. Their last three albums each won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Awards and success may have come to The White Stripes but it never seemed to go to their heads. Instead of doing what most good band do and get soft in their old age and rest on their laurels, they did what only the great bands have done and that’s go out on top. We may never again hear The White Stripes play live again but the legacy of music they have left over the years has created a spot that won’t easily be filled anytime soon.

Oh, and we also have the numerous Jack White projects that once filled his time between The White Stripes tours but will now take center stage in many a White Stripes fan’s heart.

Long live The White Stripes…

Banksy or Mr. Brainwash?

Posted on 01 February 2011 by TH3 No08

If you’ve listened to the podcast over the months you’d surely know my deep affection for the Banksy directed film “exit through the giftshop”. The documentary keeps you guessing who’s who and what are the intentions of the mysterious street artist and his new protege. Now that he’s been nominated for best documentary MBW has stepped up his game and dropped a whole new layout to promote his nomination. (photos from laist.com)

MBW Signature

Is this MBW prepping for the the Academy Awards? If Gift Shop wins, who will go onstage to accept? And…is MBW really Banksy?

This is the statement Bansky made after he found out he was nominated,

This is a big surprise. I don’t agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the ones I’m nominated for. The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me.

It’s my favorite doc of the years and I highly recommend you see it but truthfully, if Banksy is MBW then is it still considered a documentary?

Film Composer John Barry Now Living-Impaired

Posted on 31 January 2011 by mjones

Film-Composer, the legendary John Barry is no longer breathing air, reported USA today. Responsible for composing the scores of films such as Midnight Cowboy, Dances With Wolves, Out Of Africa and 11 James Bond films, this is a man who’s music will live forever, even though he did not.

Pay your respects, and watch one of these films that he helped to make memorable in the extreme, and for once think very hard about how integral the music is to the theatrical experience.

UPDATE!!!!! UPDATE!!! A better look at Chris Evans as Captian America

Posted on 13 January 2011 by TH3 No08

Here’s a higher rez/better quality version of the picture we posted yesterday. Still looks great, still don’t know what the hell those guys behind him are…

Lets round out today’s costume reveals with the tri-fecta. Here’s a scan of an Entertainment Weekly photo from aintitcool.com featuring  Chris Evans as Captain America.  Of the three costumes revealed today this is by far the most awesome of the group. Chris Evans as the classic Captain America is really working for me. This goes to the top of movies I’m looking forward to this year. Anybody have any idea what’s going on with the robot looking guys behind him?

Noxville and Samberg to be the next 3 Stooges?

Posted on 07 January 2011 by TH3 No08

It looks like Johnny Noxville and Andy Samberg could possibly be joining Australian actors Shane Jacobson as the newest iterations of The Three Stooges. Deadline reports that the actors are on a short list for The Farrelly brothers on again, off again, on again film which at one time had Jim Carrey, Sean Penn, and Benecio Del Toro attached. For pure slapstick funny (which is what the 3 Stooges were) I take Noxville and Samberg over Penn and Del Toro any day.  We’ll soon see how this all turns out as shooting is scheduled to begin March 14, 2011.

Red State trailer hits the interwebz…

Posted on 23 December 2010 by TH3 No08

Kevin Smith hates the press but apparently loves the interwebz cause that’s where he dropped an early teaser for his latest flick “RED STATE”. We’ve discussed on the podcast over the last few months our general feelings regarding this film and his approach to distribution and marketing of it and this trailer doesn’t really change any feelings I have for what he’s trying to do. Smith lists the Weinsteins in the credits (Harvey Boys) so I’m assuming he’s got distribution so we may not be treated to the public spectacle of a post screening auction like he promised but as long as it gets out there I guess that’s really all that matters. The trailer looks interesting, lots of action, creepy looking small town folk, and lots of random gun fire.  We’ll see how it all comes together in March when it is slated for release.

Teaser Poster For Dylan Dog Movie; Dead Of Night Hits

Posted on 17 December 2010 by Christian

Check out this Italian poster for the upcoming Brandon Routh horror/comedy..

I like this poster, the trailer for the movie? Not so much. It does have a certain Buffy like charm to it and I like Routh but I dunno about this one.

In New Orleans, Dylan Dog is an ace detective whose specialty is paranormal cases. Now, he must deal with vampires, werewolves, zombies and a guardian of the Hell, due to a client’s case. With the help of Marcus Adams, his un-dead assistant, he will have to preserve the sake of the Earth.

Dead Of Night is directed by Kevin Monroe and hits theatres in Italy next March but doesn’t currently have a theatrical release date Stateside..or anywhere else for that matter.

Tree of Life Trailer is Online!

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Christian

The trailer forTerrence Malick’s long awaited film The Tree of Life is finally here, via Apple. While the trailer has been attached to copies of Black Swan in limited release, this is the first time an official high def version of the trailer has been made available online. The beautiful trailer doesn’t give us much of an idea of the story just yet, but the imagery and poetry of youth, growth and life is enough to get me excited. Featuring Brad PittSean Penn and a breakout performance from Jessica Chastain, this drama looks like it’ll be well worth the long wait.

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as BadlandsDays of Heaven andThe Thin Red LineThe Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 50′s. It follows the life journey of eldest son Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years (Penn) as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack, as an adult, finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking out answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s images we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. Fox Searchlight is bringing The Tree of Life to theaters on May 27th.
