Sequels I Pretend Don’t Exist

Posted on 30 September 2011 by Charles B. French

For my first column, I’d like to talk about sequels. I like sequels. When done right (Spiderman 2) they can expand upon the universe, explore the characters in greater depth than the original allowed, and resolve dangling plot threads from the previous film. When not done well, and sadly this is often the case, they not only are a terrible movie, they retroactively ruin the previous film. (On the plus side, they do allow a lot of actors to pay back what I assume are massive gambling debts.)

Thus, to preserve my sanity and continued enjoyment of the first installment(s), there are sequels I just pretend don’t exist. As far as I’m concerned, these movies were never green-lighted, scripted, cast, financed, catered, filmed, produced, and released. They didn’t happen, and a pox on anyone who tries to shatter my precious illusion. (And yes, I am aware of the irony that writing about movies I pretend don’t exist violates my own rule. I’m sure we can move past it.)

So let’s take a look at some sequels that, after this writing, I will go back to pretending that they didn’t happen. They can rejoin all my other repressed memories. They’re having a party and want these memories to bring Jenga.

New trailer for X-Men First Class…

Posted on 27 April 2011 by TH3 No08

Here’s the newest theatrical trailer for the latest X-Men film. Very cool stuff. I like the placement of the film in the cuban missle crisis and think that will play well as the story unfolds.

The film stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Jason Flemyng, Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Lucas Till, Rose Byrne and Caleb Landry Jones, and

New X-Men: First Class Footage Debuts!

Posted on 19 April 2011 by Christian

Hit the jump to check out this new TV spot for X-Men: First Class featuring some new scenes with Havok, Banshee and more. Film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender!

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X

The Poster Wall #2

Posted on 25 March 2011 by TH3 No08

We’ve got a ton of great content for the poster wall that’s been collected from various places around the internet this past week including everything from low budget indies, foreign films, fan made posters and some pretty cool series posters. Lets get started…

Up first is a collection of fan made posters created for the upcoming X-Men: First Class film by two different artists. These are all incredible pieces of work and have a real sense of late 60′s early 70′s style that really works for this movie which looks back at the beginning of the X-Men saga.
Artist: Jeffery Zang

Artist: Dane Frost

Up next is another collection of posters from Tim Gunn’s film “Super” starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page. Very cool layout hi-lighting the costume design and the signature catch phrases of the movies two super hero characters.

Ellen Page’s Boltie

Rainn Wilson’s Crimson Bolt

Here’s a couple of posters for some indie movies hitting festivals around the country right now. These are two horror movies that come from complete opposite ends of the film making spectrum. The dark and very controversial film “A Serbian Film” and “Rubber” of the more light hearted. campy, splatter film variety. Two cool posters that prove there’s a little something for everyone out there, you just have to search for it sometimes.

Here are a few random selections from some summer flicks coming up. The “Attack the Block” poster is a nice wide format we don’t usually see in here showcasing what looks be an alien invasion. This is from a British movie starring Nick Frost of “Shuan of the Dead” fame. Also included is the Hollywood poster for “Cars 2″. Nothing special worth noting in this one. Seems kinda boring compared to what we’ve seen so far. Oh, and be on the look out for the Mo Brothers film GFG. That stands for Goddamn Motherfucking Ghouls. The film is said to take place in a hotel, where a group of folks are defending themselves from a bunch of flesh eating ghouls. Sounds interesting…

And finally here’s a look at some limited edition posters created by some boutique poster designers for limited runs. The “Sucker Punch” poster was created by artist Ken Taylor for Mondo Tees to celebrate the release of

Activision Developing A Video Game Based On X-Men: First Class?

Posted on 17 March 2011 by Christian

The latest UK edition of the Official Playstation Magazine seemingly reveals that the studio behind the Spider-Man series of games are working on one for X-Men: First Class! Check it out…

While reading an article in the latest issue of the UK edition of OPM (Official Playstation Magazine) about Activision’s decision to cancel planned releases of future Guitar Hero titles and True Crime: Hong Kong.

When they went on to talk about the franchises that the company would now be focusing on, I was more than a little surprised to come across the following:

“Activision has also been keen to point to its other properties like, erm, X-Men: First Class, Spider-Man and Transformers 3.”

X-Men: First Class!?! Well, that’s the first I’ve heard about them planning a video game adaptation of the upcoming prequel! It’s not hard to believe that they’re holding off on revealing the game when the adaptations for Thor and Green Lantern (both out at around the same time) have so far only provided us with a handful of screenshots and a couple of brief trailers.

I’m not sure about you guys, but I for one would love to play as Magneto, Beast and a few of the other character being introduced in the movie! With production on the movie being fairly rushed, it’s also a possibility that the game will be released alongside the DVD and Blu-Ray.

An In-Depth Interview With Michael Fassbender On Magneto!

Posted on 20 January 2011 by Christian

The actor goes into a huge amount of detail about playing the villainous character, his research for the role, the complexities of Magneto, wearing the iconic red and purple helmet and suit as well as many other details about the movie including its status as a prequel or reboot…

On What Drew Him To Play A Character Like Magneto:

“Hopefully I won’t disappoint the fan base out there, because I know that what Ian McKellen did sort of latched onto a lot of imaginations and was very successful. But what drew me was the script and Matthew Vaughn and the fact that James McAvoy was going to be playing young Xavier. I thought it was a fresh take on the whole story. I’ve never been a big comic book enthusiast, but I thought it was an interesting concept to go back to when they were both friends and initially came together.”

On Whether He Was Given A Pile Of Comic Books For Research:

“Yes, it did, and I got knee-deep into them once I got involved. That was all my source material, because it’s all there in the comic books in terms of a backstory and formulating the character. I did also watch the other films and took notes from those, but took most of my references from the comic books.”

On The Complexities Of The Character:

“He’s such a complex character, really, and the idea of him being a villain is interesting considering his history (Lehnsherr is a Holocaust survivor who lost his family in the camps, and later lost his wife and daughter) … he’s a very solitary individual, and the pain and grief that’s gone on even before we meet him in this film is an interesting pool of information to draw from, in coming up with this Machiavellian character for whom the ends justified the means. You can see where he’s coming from. Human beings don’t have the greatest track record in what they’ve done throughout history, so his point of view is, “Well, we are the next stage of evolution — (humans) are to us what Neanderthals were to Homo sapiens.”

On Whether This Is A Prequel Or Reboot:

“I think the fundamentals are the same. The main thread of the story is still the same. I don’t really know how to answer the question because I haven’t seen this one yet, so I haven’t had a chance to watch it side by side with the other ones and see if they’re relative to each other. Hopefully they are, I think, but also we want to do something fresh as well and open a whole new chapter with this without totally betraying what was laid down before.”

On The Mutants Of The Movie:

“The cool thing about this movie is that I think it does deal with each individual mutant, and the ones they’ve chosen are all very much individuals and unique personalities with unique gifts. What’s interesting is that we’ve gone back to a period where the mutants don’t know that there are other people out there like them. They just think they’re freaks and outcasts from society … all of these new characters are fearful of their gifts and uncomfortable and misplaced in society, so hopefully when they all sort of come together and realize they’re not alone and feel more comfortable in their own skin, that’s a discovery for all the characters that you experience.”

Comics: The X-Men Family Tree

Posted on 17 January 2011 by Christian

This cool info-graphic features most of the characters in and associated with The X-Men and how they are linked together(dated, related, nemesis etc). A must for any X comic fans..

This was created by Joe Stone. I think it’s pretty awesome, and would make a great poster. Can you name all of the characters? There are a few he left out. As well as a couple of Savage land sprogs for Colossus and Wolverine! But I guess he had to stop somewhere. Can you spot any other significant exclusions of either characters or relationships?
